Calgary and Edmonton are among the 10-plus cities bidding to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

"Why not the 2028 World Cup of Hockey in Calgary and Edmonton? An all-Alberta North American host?" said Dreger on Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading.

"It makes a lot of sense from a business perspective, and no doubt the people of Calgary want to show off their brand new building. I know that Calgary and Edmonton submitted their bids at the start of this week. It's a loose deadline, so there are 10 or more NHL cities that will submit their bids to the NHL. We're talking about Montreal and Vancouver in terms of the Canadian interest, Vegas, Tampa Bay, and Dallas, among others."

The NHL announced in February they would hold a World Cup in 2028 with plans to have one every four years after that.

With the league also committed to sending players to the 2026 Olympics in Milan in February, it sets up a schedule where NHL players will play best-on-best hockey every two years between the Olympics and World Cups.

"We couldn't be more excited about making a reality: Olympics, World Cups, Olympics, World Cups on a regular schedule of the best hockey players in the world representing their countries," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in February. "We know the full blown World Cup is going to be sensational."

Bettman confirmed there will not be teams such as Team North America or Team Europe and it will be an NHL-player only event like this year's 4 Nations Face-Off, that included Canada, United States, Sweden and Finland.

The 4 Nations Face-Off had Montreal and Boston splitting host duties as Canada beat the United States for gold in overtime.

The NHL last held a World Cup of Hockey in 2016 in Toronto where Canada beat Team Europe for the title. NHL players last skated at the Olympics in 2014, when Canada defeated Sweden 3-0 for the gold medal.

The province of Alberta is also set to host the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.
