CLEVELAND (AP) — Jamison Battle scored 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers that helped the Toronto Raptors pull away in the final two minutes of a 112-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Cup opener for both teams Friday night.

The Cavaliers, who were without All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell and center Jarrett Allen because of injuries, were within four when Battle made a 3 with 1:07 remaining and hit another half a minute later for a 108-98 lead. Battle made all seven of his shots, six from long range.

RJ Barrett and Brandon Ingram also scored 20 points apiece for the Raptors, who stopped a four-game losing streak that followed a season-opening win.

Evan Mobley scored 29 points and D'Andre Hunter added 26 for the Cavaliers. Mitchell didn't play due to left hamstring tightness, and Allen was out two nights after breaking the ring finger on his left hand in a 125-105 loss to Boston.

The Raptors trailed by 10 points midway through the third quarter but went back in front in the final minute of the quarter on a bucket by Scottie Barnes, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers were back in front in the middle of the fourth quarter when Battle gave the Raptors the lead for good with a 3-pointer.

Jaylon Tyson scored 18 points for Cleveland.

{allcanada} Canada on a roll, looking for fifth straight win at FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

After watching from the stands as Brazil blanked host Morocco 3-0 at Rabat's Olympic Stadium in the opening match of the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup, Canada gets to play the South Americans there in Saturday's quarterfinal.

"We'll be at the bench that we sat behind," said Canada coach Jen Herst. "So it's a nice full-circle moment for us."

The young Canadians have outscored their opposition 18-2 in winning four straight at the Football Academy Mohammed VI. Now in the business end of the expanded 24-team tournament, the venue is far grander and the stakes much higher.

"It's been a great run," Herst said. "I think one of the keys is we've been enjoying ourselves … both on and off the pitch."

"We have this great unity and togetherness … I think having those tight bonds, that connection off the field is what you then see on the field in terms of how we fight for each other. But even the connection that we have in possession you can see that this team is a connected team."

That connections has been shown in the Canadian goal celebrations, which have been both numerous and creative.

Saturday marks Canada's fifth trip to the quarterfinals in eight trips to the under-17 championship. The Canadian women have made it to the semifinals just once, in 2018 when they finished fourth after losing 1-0 to Mexico in the semifinal and 2-1 to New Zealand in the third-place game.

Canada also made the quarterfinals in 2008, 2012 and 2014.

Herst is expecting a typically technical, creative Brazilian side on the ball, with lots of shots and crosses. Out of possession, the Brazilians like to man-mark.

Julia Amireh, Melisa Kekic and Daniela Feria-Estrada have each scored three goals for Canada. Giovanna Waksman and Gi Iseppe have three apiece for Brazil.

Canada romped to a 6-0 win over Zambia while Brazil blanked China 3-0 in round-of-16 play Wednesday. The Canada-Brazil winner will face either defending champion North Korea or 2014 winner Japan in the semifinal.

Herst says the quality of the tournament has been shown by the fact that the United States and Spain failed to survive the round of 16, losing penalty shootouts to the Netherlands and France, respectively.

"Going forward we're expecting it to be tough, now we're getting down to the business end," she said. "Brazil are a very tough side. They're very unique in how they play and very much themselves."

"And it's only going to get tougher from there as well," she added. "And we're hoping to go all the way."

Brazil is making its fourth trip to the quarterfinals but has never managed to go farther.

"We're very happy. For the first time in the history of the U-17 (side), we've made it past the first knockout round," said Brazil coach Rilany Sila, a former Brazilian international defender who played club football in Brazil, Iceland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. "We want to make even more history. That's four games down, three to go."

Canada advanced to the knockout round here by topping Group D with wins over Nigeria (4-1), Samoa (6-0) and France (2-1). Brazil placed second in Group A, defeating Morocco, drawing Costa Rica (1-1) and losing to Italy (4-3).

Canada missed out on the 2024 FIFA U-17 tournament but made the seven previous editions. CONCACAF only sent two teams to the 2024 FIFA championship, with CONCACAF's Dominican Republic hosting the tournament, and Canada finished third in qualifying after losing 2-1 to Mexico after extra time in the semifinal.

Led by interim coach Gary Moody, the young Canadians qualified for the 2025 FIFA tournament in April, going unbeaten in topping its CONCACAF qualifying group by beating Nicaragua (5-0), Panama (2-0) and Puerto Rico (3-2).

Brazil finished second, behind Paraguay, with a 2-0-3 record in the final stage of South American qualifying.

{allcanada} Jets captain Lowry (hip) ‘very close’ to returning to the lineup

Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel said Friday that captain Adam Lowry is very close to returning to the lineup after off-season hip surgery.

Arniel says Lowry, who was skating in a light blue jersey as an extra, had a great practice today and that he will not be going to the AHL's Manitoba Moose for a conditioning stint.

Lowry underwent hip surgery in May, resumed skating in August and targeted late October/early November as the target for a return to play.

The 32-year-old forward had 16 goals and 18 assists in 73 games last year with the Jets.

He is in the final season of a five-year, $16.25 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Lowry, a third-round pick by Winnipeg in 2011, was named captain of the Jets ahead of the 2023-24 season. He helped the Jets capture the Presidents' Trophy last season after a 116-point regular season campaign.

The St. Louis native has scored 121 goals with 273 points in 775 career NHL games, all with Winnipeg.

The Jets sit atop the Central Division with 16 points (tied with the Utah Mammoth and Colorado Avalanche) and will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday afternoon.

William Nylander will be a game-time decision for the Maple Leafs against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, NBCSP, SNW, SNO, CBC). The forward did not play in a 6-3 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday and has missed two of the past three games with an lower-body injury. "It's going to be a decision that's made tomorrow," Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said Friday. "... If he says he's ready to play and he wants to play, I want him in the lineup." ... Chris Tanev practiced Friday and is nearing a return from an upper-body injury. "It went well today, so we'll see how tomorrow goes." The defenseman has not played since Oct. 21, having missed the past four games. ... Forward Scott Laughton is "real close" to returning from a lower-body injury that has sidelined him all season, Berube said.

{allcanada} Canadians Fernandez, Mboko to meet in Hong Kong Open semifinals

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko are set to clash in the semifinals of the Hong Kong Open tennis tournament after cruising to quarterfinal wins on Friday.

Fernandez, the second seed in Hong Kong, advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over seventh-seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania.

Mboko, seeded third, advanced when sixth-seeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya retired while trailing 6-1, 3-1.

Fernandez saved four of five break points while breaking Cirstea on three of nine chances in her second win over the Romanian veteran this month.

The 23-year-old from Laval, Que., defeated Cirstea in the semifinals of the Japan Women's Open en route to claiming the fifth title of the career.

The 19-year-old Mboko, from Toronto, was dominating her quarterfinal before Kalinskaya retired after 48 minutes. She had nine aces and did not suffer a break while claiming 61.8 per cent of total points.

Mboko appears to be back in form after a slumped that followed her first WTA title at the National Bank Open in Montreal. She had lost four matches in a row after her breakout win before reaching the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open last week in Tokyo.

It will be the first meeting between the Fernandez and Mboko.

Fifth-seeded Maya Joint of Australia was set to face Spain's Cristina Bucsa in the other semifinal of the WTA 250 event.

{allcanada} Miller scores in OT as Rangers rally to beat Oilers 4-3

--

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) J.T. Miller scored 2:49 into overtime and the New York Rangers erased a two-goal deficit to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Thursday night.

Johnny Brodzinski, Braden Schneider and Taylor Raddysh also scored for the Rangers, who improved to 5-1-1 on the road this season.

Darnell Nurse had a pair of goals and Matt Savoie had his first career goal for the Oilers, who have lost three of their last four.

Igor Shesterkin made 33 for the Rangers, while Stuart Skinner made 30 stops for the Oilers.

The Oilers got a bizarre goal to take a 3-1 lead midway through the second period as Nurse took a shot from a bad angle near the goal line that nobody initially thought went in until a review determined that the puck was sitting on top of Shesterkin's pads as he backed into the net.

Shesterkin has had his struggles against Edmonton. He came into the game with a 1-3 record, an .886 save percentage and 3.00 goals-against average versus the Oilers. In 230 starts against the rest of the league, he had posted a .918 save percentage and 2.47 GAA.

Adam Henrique, who picked up an assist, received his silver stick for playing 1,000 regular-season NHL games in a ceremony before the contest, having achieved the feat just over a week ago in a game in Ottawa. He became the 409th player in NHL history to do so.

Rangers: Complete a four-game trip in Seattle against the Kraken on Saturday.

Oilers: Host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Keifer Sherwood had a hat trick, Jake DeBrusk scored the only goal in a shootout and the Vancouver Canucks beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Thursday night.

DeBrusk beat Jordan Binnington in the third round of the shootout to give the Canucks their second win in six games.

Kevin Lankinen made 36 saves for Vancouver.

Sherwood's third goal came with 12:56 remaining in the third period. He picked up a loose puck in the right circle after a stick was broken and whistled the puck over the shoulder of Binnington, who finished with 15 saves.

It was his second career hat trick. Sherwood has scored nine goals this season.

Jimmy Snuggerud, Dylan Holloway and Pius Suter scored for St. Louis, which outshot the Canucks 39-18 but extended its winless streak to six games.

It was Vancouver's second win in its last seven games against St. Louis.

The Blues tied it at 3-all when Pius Suter scored on the power play midway through the third period.

The Blues went ahead 2-1 on Snuggerud's power-play goal 58 seconds into the second. Sherwood scored his second goal on a breakaway midway through the period to tie it 2-2.

St. Louis went ahead 1-0 when Holloway netted a wrist shot from the right circle early in the first. Vancouver tied it on a power-play goal by Sherwood.

Canucks right winger Brock Boeser took a puck to the midsection 33 seconds into the game. He did not return.

{allcanada} Villardi, Scheifele, Connor each have 3 points as Jets beat Blackhawks 6-3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Gabriel Villardi had two goals and an assist, and linemates Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had a goal and a two assists as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 on Thursday night.

Vladislav Namestnikov and Josh Morrissey also scored for Winnipeg and Dylan DeMelo had two assists. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 21 shots.

Teuvo Teravainen, Alex Vlasic and Andre Burakovsky scored for Chicago, and Spencer Knight finished with 26 saves in the opener of a six-game trip.

The Jets scored quick goals in each of the first two periods.

After Chicago took a penalty at 1:21 of the first period, Namestnikov scored 21 seconds later on a quick feed from behind the net by Gustav Nyquist.

An unlucky bounce led to the Blackhawks evening it up at 8:57. Hellebuyck went to play a puck when it was dumped in the corner, but it hit a seam in the boards and bounced straight to Teravainen as he was skating to the front of the net.

Vilardi and Scheifele teamed up on a 2-on-1 to go ahead 2-1 with 3:04 remaining in the opening period.

A Chicago turnover early in the second gave Connor the puck and he passed it to Scheifele, who fired a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past Knight at 1:54.

Vilardi scored his second of the night and fourth of the season with 8:41 remaining in the middle period after DeMelo sent him a puck from the corner.

After Morrissey recorded his first goal of the season at 10:12 of the third, Vlasic scored his first less than two minutes later. Burakovsky and Connor finished off the scoring.

Winnipeg's Jonathan Toews had an assist in his first game against his old team, which chose him third overall in the 2006 NHL draft. Toews, 37, missed the past two seasons with health issues and signed a one-year deal with his hometown Jets. He has two goals and four assists.

Blackhawks: Visit Edmonton on Saturday.

Jets: Host Pittsburgh on Saturday.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle scored in the shootout and the Ottawa Senators beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Thursday night.

Ottawa's Jake Sanderson redeemed himself for an earlier mistake by tying the game 3-all with 2:49 remaining with a shot from the top of the faceoff circle.

The Flames benefited from Sanderson's giveaway with Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau playing a give-and-go before Kadri beat Linus Ullmark, who stopped 27 shots, at 8:16 of the third.

Artem Zub made it 2-2 at 2:36 of the third with a blast from just inside the blue line.

The Flames jumped to a 2-1 first-period lead thanks to a pair of power-play goals. Ottawa gave up two power-play goals on four Calgary chances.

Yegor Sharangovich opened the scoring at 5:51 beating Ullmark high glove side.

Ottawa tied the game less than two minutes later when Shane Pinto's shot kicked out to Lars Eller at the side of the net for a short-handed goal.

With the Flames on the power play, Ullmark lost sight of the puck and Matt Coronato got his stick on the loose puck in the crease and pick up his third of the season to regain the lead with 4:07 left in the first.

Devin Cooley made 35 saves for the Flames.

{allcanada} Adams focused on preparation as he faces former Lions team in Western SF

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., has a pretty simple formula for his ideal state of mind for Saturday's West semifinal at BC Place versus the Lions.

"Calm, relaxed, and prepared," he said with a smile this week after a practice.

Adams is 0-2 against the Lions after the club traded him to the Stamps last November. That includes a 52-23 blowout at McMahon Stadium in September where he threw two early interceptions. He downplayed going against Nathan Rourke and a cast of former teammates in the biggest game of the season.

"They got us twice…and they want to put on a good performance for their fans," he said.

"It's a playoff game. Whether it's BC or anyone else, it means a lot…I spent some time there, but it's all good. We know we've got to get this win."

Adams also commended Rourke, a Most Outstanding Player candidate who led the most-efficient offence in league history this season.

"Nate's balling," Adams said. "He's having a hell of a year, especially the backend of the season.

"I'm just excited for the opportunity."

Adams, an Oregon and Eastern Washington product, seized the one chance he was given in southern Alberta with a Stamps organization in transition.

The 32-year-old native of Pasadena, California, led Calgary to an 11-7 mark – a six-win improvement over 2024 – in his first season at the helm. Teammates have rallied around his upbeat personality, intense work ethic, and leadership style.

"He puts people out of their comfort zones and allows them to speak as well," veteran Reggie Begelton told TSN at the start of the season. "He calls them out to see what you're going to do…after warmups, it's not just the same guys speaking before practice. He'll call somebody out and say, 'Hey, what are you going to say?' It makes everybody one."

Adams played with receiver Dominique Rhymes in BC, and Rhymes led Calgary receivers with 886 yards and six touchdowns this season. He said that Adam's non-linear journey through the league prepared him for the challenge of leading the Stamps.

"It's the complexity of the league," he said. "The thing about Vernon [is] he shrugs it off. He keeps playing. He keeps making big plays…we're excited to have him as our quarterback."

At his introductory news conference months ago, both Adams and head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson said that they'd had eyes on each other for several seasons and wanted to eventually work together.

On the heels of an impressive bounce back campaign for the franchise, they'll try to lead Calgary on Saturday to its first playoff win since they took home the 2018 Grey Cup.

"I'm proud of the guys for what we've accomplished, and to me that's the success," Dickenson said.

"But you're really not in it for the regular season victories. You're trying to make noise in the playoffs. I do believe in the process though.

"I don't think that it's just if you win the Grey Cup, that means you're successful. These guys have put a lot of time and work into it. They've gotten a lot better and have already accomplished something that not a lot of people thought they would. It's already a success, but what level of success?"

Adams, already accomplished in his own right, is fuelled in part by what he doesn't have…yet.

"I haven't been to a Grey Cup yet," he said.

"It matters a lot, man. I think we all play to become champions. It really does matter, but I can only control what I can control and be the best version of me and being in the 'Make Plays' mode.

" Don't do too much. Try to own the ball and move the ball as well."

{allcanada} Canada blanks Zambia to set up quarterfinal date with Brazil at FIFA U17 World Cup

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SALÉ — Canada scored three goals in each half en route to a comfortable 6-0 win over Zambia in round-of-16 play Wednesday, setting up a quarterfinal date with Brazil at the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup.

The Canada-Brazil winner will face either defending champion North Korea or 2014 winner Japan in the semifinal. Brazil blanked China 3-0 in its round-of-16 game.

Daniela Feria-Estrada scored twice and Melisa Kekic, Mya Angus, Chloe Taylor and Amy Medley added singles for Canada at the Football Academy Mohammed VI. Several of the goals were of highlight-reel quality, although Kekic missed a second-half penalty.

Canada has outscored its opposition 18-2 in winning four straight at the 24-team tournament.

Canada's best showing at the U-17 championship was fourth in 2018 when it was beaten by Mexico in the semifinals. It also made the quarterfinals in 2008, 2012 and 2014.

Canada advanced to the knockout round here by topping Group D with wins over Nigeria (4-1), Samoa (6-0) and France (2-1). Zambia moved on as one of the four best third-place finishers, behind Japan and Paraguay in Group F.

In other round-of-16 action Wednesday, France upset Spain, runner-up in 2024 and champion in 2018 and '22, in a penalty shootout, Mexico edged Paraguay 1-0 and Japan blanked Colombia 4-0.

Zambia, whose entire team is based domestically, bounced back from losses to Paraguay (2-1) and Japan (1-0) with a decisive 4-0 victory over New Zealand.

Zambia was full of willing runners but lacked a cutting edge against Canada.

It was a stop-and-start first half due to numerous injury delays with Zambia's Nana Malanda having to come off in the 34th minute.

The Canadians went ahead in the 13th minute on the counter-attack when Olivia Chisholm's elegant through ball put Kekic behind the Zambia defence. Kekic, who had blasted a shot over the bar minutes earlier, made no mistake this time as she slid a low shot past Zambia goalkeeper Loveness Chingwele.

Feria-Estrada doubled the lead in the 30th minute when, after a Canadian throw-in, Taylor floated a cross into the Zambian penalty box. Kekic swung a leg and missed but the ball found Feria-Estrada, who swept it in.

Angus made it 3-0 with a spectacular strike in the 39th minute from well outside the penalty box. Deftly controlling a hard pass with her knee, she looped a left-footed shot over a diving Chingwele into the top corner of the goal.

Fiji referee Torika Delai pointed to the penalty spot when substitute Julia Amireh whet down in a tangle with Zambian captain Mercy Chipasula.

Zambia challenged the call and Delai went to the pitchside monitor, electing to stick with her call after video review. But Kekic sent her penalty well wide of the goalpost in the 60th minute.

Canada then unsuccessfully challenged the penalty, seemingly on the ground that the 'keeper came off her line.

The video support system allows coaches two requests per game for a video review. If the review by the referee results in the original decision being changed, the team retains its request.

Taylor headed home Canada's fourth off a corner in the 80th minute with Medley, getting the ball from Amireh behind the Zambia defence, adding a fifth five minutes later. Feria-Estrada closed out the scoring in the 92nd minute with a lovely free kick from just outside of the penalty box.

Canada outshot Zambia 12-10 (9-5 in shots on target).

Canada coach Jen Herst made one change to her starting lineup with Feria-Estrada slotting in for Amireh. Canada was without suspended forward Reed Tingley, who was sent off for a second yellow card against France after coming on as a substitute.

The Zambia starting 11 featured defender Faith Kaunda, who turned 15 last week. Melyna Alexis, Canada's 15-year-old, came on in the 71st minute.

The Zambians were the last Africa country involved in the tournament. The Ivory Coast and Cameroon failed to get out of the group stage and host Morocco and Nigeria lost in earlier round-of-16 play.

Zambia was taking part in its third edition of the U17 championship, having failed to exit the group stage in 2014 and 2024 with a combined record of 1-5-0. Zambia qualified for the 2025 tournament by defeating Tanzania (4-0) and Benin (6-2-) in two-legged series in African U-17 Women's World Cup qualifying play.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Cole Sillinger had two goals and an assist, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 on Wednesday night for their third straight win.

Mathieu Olivier had a goal and three assists, Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and Ivan Provorov and Dante Fabbro also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won five of six. Charlie Coyle had four assists, and Elvis Merzlikins finished with 35 saves.

Sammy Blais and Nicholas Robertson each had a goal and an assist, and John Tavares scored his 500th career goal for Toronto. Cayden Primeau had 19 saves as the Maple Leafs snapped a two-game win streak and lost for the fourth time in six games (2-3-1).

Toronto outshot Columbus 9-6 in the first period but trailed by two goals after 20 minutes.

Sillinger gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead 6:56 into game, taking a pass from Coyle inside the blue line, skating up on Primeau and beating the goalie with a forehand shot past the blocker. Coyle got his 300th career assist on the play.

Werenski made it 2-0 with 8:44 remaining in the first as he fired a shot past Primeau on the glove side.

The Maple Leafs then had an 18-7 advantage on shots in the second and fell further behind.

Blais, in the lineup in place of William Nylander (lower body injury) after 10 games as a healthy scratch, got Toronto on the scoreboard at 2:43.

However, the Blue Jackets scored three goals in an 8 1/2-minute stretch later in the period to pull away.

Provorov put a backhander past Primeau at 8:33 to restore the two-goal lead. Sillinger got his second of the night with 6:36 remaining as he scored on a 2-on-1 with Coyle, and Fabbro made it 5-1 a little more than 3 1/2 minutes later as got a drop pass from Olivier and fired it past Primeau from inside the left circle.

Olivier made it a four goal lead at 7:50 of the third, and Tavares and Robertson scored 2:25 apart late to pull the Maple Leafs to 6-3.

Maple Leafs: At Philadelphia on Saturday.

Blue Jackets: Host St. Louis on Saturday.

{allcanada} Oilers’ Hyman out at least another week due to wrist injury

--

EDMONTON — Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said forward Zach Hyman will need at least another week before returning to the lineup.

Hyman, a key part of the team's offensive attack, skated with the club and said he's feeling great and ready to return to action.

"He looks ready, I want to put him in," Knoblauch told a post-skate media scrum on Wednesday. "The medical staff is holding him back."

Hyman, who fit in ideally alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, has been out with a wrist injury that he suffered in Game 4 of the Western Conference final against Dallas on May 27.

"We said it was, bare minimum, Nov. 1, and it won't be Nov. 1," Knoblauch said. "It will be at least a week after that."

Hyman said he'll be meeting with doctors this week and hopefully there will be no further setbacks.

"I'm going to tell you I'm ready to go because that's how I feel," he said." But at the end of the day, the doctors are the ones who are there to protect you from yourself at times and make sure that when you do return, you are able and ready."

Hyman, who underwent surgery this summer, brings not only goal scoring – he had a career-high 54 goals two seasons ago – but also a grittiness the team is lacking up front.

Knoblauch said goal scoring has been an issue in most of the team's games this season, part of the reason their record is a mediocre 5-4-2.

"Zach is as good as anyone at scoring goals, so he would give us some depth there," Knoblauch said. "And also with our team a little tenacity, a little grit in getting in on the forecheck."

The Oilers are home Thursday to the New York Rangers.

{allcanada} Durant, Rockets hand struggling Raptors their fourth straight loss

--

TORONTO — Kevin Durant had 31 points as the Houston Rockets flew past the Toronto Raptors 139-121 on Wednesday.

Durant also had five rebounds and an assist as Houston (2-2) won back-to-back games. Jabari Smith Jr. added 25 points with five boards and five assists.

Alperen Sengun neared a triple double with 18 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Scottie Barnes also had 31 points as Toronto (1-4) dropped its fourth straight game. Barnes added five rebounds and two assists.

Brandon Ingram had 29 points, four assists and two rebounds.

Raptors starting centre Jakob Poeltl was ruled out hours before the opening tip-off with lower back stiffness.

Rookie Collin Murray-Boyles made his first career NBA start in just the third game of his career. He finished with 13 points and two assists over 25 minutes.

The game's start time was moved up by an hour to allow fans to watch the Toronto Blue Jays play the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series. Scotiabank Arena had the critical baseball game up on in-arena screens following the final buzzer of the Raptors game.

Takeaways

Rockets: At different points in the night Houston was able to put five players all over six-foot-10, at least an inch taller than six-foot-nine Sandro Mamukelashvii, the tallest Toronto player. The size advantage held by Smith (6-11), Durant (6-10), Sengun (6-11), Steven Adams (6-11), and Clint Capela (6-10) over the entire Raptors roster allowed them to out-rebound the hosts 53-22.

Raptors: Poeltl's absence hurt Toronto in two ways. First, it allowed Sengun and Adams free reign around the basket, with Houston outscoring the Raptors 66-36 in the paint. It also hurt Toronto's depth, with the Rockets getting 37 bench points to the Raptors' 23.

Key moment

Durant's driving layup 4:16 into the third quarter capped Houston's 16-6 run to open the second half.

Key stat

Toronto lost despite being more efficient from three-point range, going 21 for 40 (52.5 per cent) from beyond the arc.

Up next

Raptors: Travel to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers on Friday.

Rockets: Head to Boston to take on the Celtics on Saturday.

{allcanada} Report: Injury to Canucks' Conor Garland not serious

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Vancouver Canucks can breathe a tentative sigh of relief.

After exiting Tuesday's game against the New York Rangers early, the injury to Conor Garland is not believed to be serious, per CHEK News' Rick Dhaliwal.

Despite this, Dhaliwal further reports that Garland will not be travelling with the team on their upcoming three-game road trip.

In what appears to be a related move, forward Mackenzie MacEachern was recalled and forward Nils Aman was reassigned to AHL Abbotsford.

Garland exited against the Rangers after the second period, though it was not immediately clear when he was hurt. He was on the receiving end of a big hit from Rangers forward Sam Carrick in the first period.

After the game, head coach Adam Foote told reporters that Garland was still undergoing evaluation.

The Canucks are already dealing with a host of injuries, with captain Quinn Hughes sidelined in addition to Filip Chytil, Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Teddy Blueger, Victor Mancini, Derek Forbort and Nils Hoglander.

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) — Brad Marchand is stepping away from the Florida Panthers to help a friend whose daughter died last week of cancer.

Marchand is serving as a guest coach Wednesday night for the under-18 March and Mill Co. Hunters in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in place of friend JP MacCallum. Marchand is a co-owner of the team.

The game is a fundraiser for the family after the loss of 10-year-old Selah Panacci-MacCallum and includes a raffle for an autographed Marchand jersey.

"Please join us in celebrating an amazing night at the rink made possible by the ongoing giving nature of a 10 year-old girl that loved the game with all her (heart)," Marchand posted on Instagram.

Marchand missed Florida's game Tuesday night against Anaheim. Coach Paul Maurice expects Marchand to be available when the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions face Dallas on Saturday.
