{allcanada} Bombito returns to Canada’s roster for October men’s soccer friendlies

Canada coach Jesse Marsch is welcoming back a key player for the present and future in the October FIFA international window.

Defender Moise Bombito has returned to the men's national team roster for games against Australia and Colombia after missing four months following wrist surgery and a tibia stress fracture.

The Canadian men, who rose to a record No. 26 in the latest FIFA world rankings, host No. 25 Australia in Bombito's hometown of Montreal on Oct. 10 at Stade Saputo before facing No. 14 Colombia on Oct. 14 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J.

"Really excited that Moise is back," Marsch said after announcing the roster Monday. "Moise is a really mature young player and has established himself at an incredibly high level with Nice.

"An incredibly important player with a big future. And for us, I think that he's going to prove to be an incredibly important player for the national team as well."

Bombito broke out at the 2024 Copa America when he formed a strong centre back duo with Derek Cornelius. A defender for Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids at the time, Bombito quickly secured a move to France's OGC Nice and made 35 appearances in all competitions last season.

The 25-year-old took the pitch in Sunday's 1-1 Ligue 1 draw against Paris FC and played a full 90 minutes after his injuries forced him out of last summer's Canadian Shield and CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the September international window.

Marsch said he's kept in close contact with Bombito over the past weeks and months. He expects the speedy centre back to start in one match during the October window — not both.

"We want to make sure that we're still careful enough with him that we don't risk any potential injuries," he said. "As much as he's healthy from his wrist and tibia perspective, it's always a little bit of a danger that when a player comes back after being out for months, that he picks up some muscle injuries."

Last time out, the Canadian men won a pair of friendlies on European soil, defeating Romania 3-0 and Wales 1-0 with 19-year-old Luc de Fougerolles filling for Bombito at central defence.

Canada remains without several key players, including captain Alphonso Davies (knee) of Bayern Munich, Celtic right back Alistair Johnston (hamstring) and Vancouver Whitecaps defender Sam Adekugbe (Achilles).

Davies resumed training at Bayern in late July. Marsch said a return for November's international window is likely too soon but "not out of the question."

"Let's see how he does over the next month," he said. "Everybody's really focused on just making sure that Alphonso has the best chance to come back to a hundred per cent as quickly as possible."

Johnston, meanwhile, is progressing well after sustaining his injury in late-August.

"Already starting to get on the pitch and do some individual work, which could bode well for him potentially making an early return and being available for November," Marsch said.

Marsch also called up goalkeeper James Pantemis, who joins Portland Timbers teammate Maxime Crepeau and Minnesota United's Dayne St. Clair after Jayden Hibbert held the third 'keeper spot earlier this month.

Winger Liam Millar rejoins the roster following his anterior cruciate ligament tear last October while playing for England's Hull City. Toronto FC captain Jonathan Osorio, who has 85 caps, is also back in the fold.

Juventus striker Jonathan David and vice-captain Stephen Eustaquio of FC Porto were also named to the 24-man roster.

The men's national team holds a 3-5-1 record against Australia. In three matches against Colombia, Canada defeated the South Americans 2-0 in the 2000 Gold Cup final and lost in two friendlies.

"This will be a big window for us to see how well we can understand exactly what each opponent presents and then how well we can be exactly what we want to be in each match," Marsch said. "This is maybe one of the most important windows in terms of competition for our preparation for next summer.

"Two really good opponents and two massive challenges for us."

In November, Canada is set to face No. 24 Ecuador in Toronto on Nov. 13 and No. 49 Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Nov. 18 as the squad continues its road to co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and the United States.

{allcanada} Canadian MF Millar returns to action with Hull City after ACL injury

Canadian midfielder Liam Millar returned to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon after being sidelined for nearly a year with an ACL injury.

The 26-year-old was a second half substitute for his club team Hull City of the English Football League Championship.

Millar entered the game with his side down 2-0 against Preston and was effective during his time on the pitch by creating scoring opportunities for Hull City.

Hull City scored twice in the second half as the game ended with a 2-2 draw.

Millar suffered a torn ACL last October in a match against Burnley.

The Brampton, Ont., native joined Hull from Basel last summer and had his first season with the Tigers cut short when he suffered the knee injury just 11 games into his tenure with his new team.

Millar has 35 caps with the Canadian national team, where he has started 17 matches. He is in the mix to be named to next summer's team for the FIFA World Cup.

{allcanada} ‘Reservation Dogs’ Alum Sarah Podemski To Star In Indie ‘Patient’ From Filmmaker Lori Felker

Sarah Podemski

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Sarah Podemski, an alum of series like Reservation Dogs and Resident Alien, has wrapped on the Chicago shoot for Patient, a new indie feature from filmmaker Lori Felker (Future Language: The Dimensions of Von LMO).

Expanding upon Felker's 2023 short of the same name, the film tells the story of Reggie, a medical actor who performs as a patient to help med students practice bedside manner — until she faces a genuine medical ordeal of her own. Combining scripted narrative with improvisation, it at the same time juxtaposes professional actors with real "Standardized Patients."

"Patient is designed to be a hybrid of my story, cinematic drama, realism, and absurdity allowing me as director to move deeper into the collaborative moment between performer and director," explained Felker, who previously helmed the doc Future Language on musician Von LMO. "Also because part of Reggie's story reflects my experiences in Chicago, filming in and around the area and working with our incredible local talent, crews, and resources is imperative."

Supporting cast for Patient includes Gary Farmer (Dead Man), William Marquez (Primrose Inn), Mary Beth Fisher (Sense8) and Krystel V. McNeil (The Pitt). Jake Bloom ($POSITIONS) and Desiree Staples (My Divorce Party) produced alongside Podemski via her Mukwa Media, with James Gadon co-producing.

Podemski played Rita Smallhill, mother of Bear (D'Pharoah Woon-A-Tai), in FX's Peabody Award winner Reservation Dogs, a landmark show for Indigenous representation, which ran for three seasons. She also starred in all four seasons of Syfy/USA's Resident Alien, with indies The Floaters and Warrior Strong among her recent feature credits. The actress is repped by Creative Drive Artists, Industry Entertainment and Platform Law.

Farmer is repped by Progressive Artists Agency and Linda Hart; Marquez by Shirley Hamilton Talent; Fisher by Grossman & Jack Talent and HCKR Agency; McNeil by Stewart Talent; and Staples by FireStarter Entertainment.

{allcanada} Vancouver vs. Vancouver: Whitecaps, VFC to battle in Canadian Championship final

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER — History will be made when the Canadian Championship final is played on Wednesday.

What remains to be seen is which Vancouver soccer team will find its name in the record books.

The host Vancouver Whitecaps have an opportunity to become the first team in the tournament's modern era to hoist the Voyageurs Cup four years in a row.

Vancouver FC will try to stop them and become the first Canadian Premier League team to win the title.

"Obviously, it's a chance for us to show what we feel we're really about on the biggest stage possible," said VFC captain Callum Irving.

Toronto FC is the only team that has won four straight Canadian Championship titles, accomplishing the feat between 2009 and 2012.

Founded in 2008, the tournament featured just three teams until 2011, when FC Edmonton joined. The format expanded in 2019 with the addition of six CPL teams, and this year's iteration includes 15 teams across six leagues.

The Whitecaps are the heavy favourites to lift the Cup once again this year.

Not only are the 'Caps three-time reigning champs, the club also heads into the match sitting second in Major League Soccer's Western Conference (16-6-9) and boasting a raft of top talent, including German soccer legend Thomas Muller.

Outside expectations bring their own challenges, Muller noted.

"Everybody knows that this is only one game. It's a sudden death. And then maybe the pressure comes up. And so things can happen during a game," said the attacking midfielder. "That's what it is, and that's what we have to deal with.

"But I feel that we are ready for it. We are ready for it, and so I'm not scared. I have no doubts that we are ready for this challenge. But it will be a challenge, 100 per cent."

Muller, too, has a shot at hitting a major milestone on Wednesday.

A win would mark his 35th trophy in professional soccer, breaking a tie with Toni Kroos for the most decorated German player of all time.

"I'm not focused on making history," said the former Bayern Munich star. "I'm focused on having this winning feeling, having this feeling that we are strong and we progress as a team and enjoy the game of football together. That's what I'm focused on."

Vancouver FC has struggled in CPL play this season and currently sits at the bottom of the league standings with a 4-15-6 record.

But Martin Nash has started to turn the team around since being named interim head coach in late July.

VFC upset fellow CPL club Atletico Ottawa 3-1 in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinal and went on to win the two-legged series 3-2 on aggregate.

The squad is also coming off a convincing 3-1 victory over the Halifax Wanderers in league play on Sunday.

"There's a lot of talent in the group," Nash said. "They're all willing to learn and they're taking things on board, from the older players to the younger, they're all taking in the information."

The 'Caps have fallen to a CPL side during the Canadian Championships before, losing to Pacific FC in the 2021 tournament.

Irving played for Pacific at the time and has talked to his teammates about how sticking with their normal routines and preparation will be key to preparing for the final.

"I think a lot of people can get maybe a little in their heads when it comes to a big game like this and a final, where all of a sudden you start thinking 'I need to do more,'" the goalkeeper said. "In reality, it's a big game, but it's also just 90 minutes of football."

The fact that Vancouver FC has nothing to lose is part of what makes them a dangerous opponent, said Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sorensen.

"That's the great thing about Cup football — sometimes unexpected things happen that you don't see in regular-season games. So I think it's great," he said.

The 'Caps will look to dictate the pace of the game, he added, be good with the ball and move it fast.

"It's a big night for us, but it's maybe even a bigger night for Vancouver FC," Sorensen said.

"And I think it's a great achievement they've reached this final. But we also know they're going to bring everything they have, and they're going to do everything they can — and even do better than they may be used to — because they're up against a better opponent than they're used to, probably."

{allcanada} Max Pacioretty joins coaching staff at University of Michigan

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Max Pacioretty is going back to his alma mater.

The longtime NHL forward has joined the University of Michigan men's hockey program as special assistant to head coach Brandon Naurato, the school announced Tuesday.

Pacioretty, 36, played 17 years in the NHL, including last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He had five goals and eight assists in 37 regular-season games in 2024-25 before adding three goals and five assists in 11 playoff games.

After the Leafs' second-round loss, Pacioretty told reporters he was unsure if he would keep playing.

"After 17 seasons in the NHL, I'm excited to begin this next chapter with Michigan Hockey," Pacioretty said in a statement Tuesday. "I'm so thankful for the teammates, coaches and fans who have been a part of my journey. Hockey has given me so much, and now I have the opportunity to help develop the next generation of players. Michigan has a tradition of producing elite talent, and I can't wait to share what I've learned to help these guys grow on and off the ice.

"Just as important, this next step allows me to be closer to my family and spend more time with my kids. I'm going to be coaching my four boys in youth hockey and that's something I'll really cherish as a dad."

Pacioretty played one season at the University of Michigan after he was selected 22nd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2007 NHL Draft. He went on to become captain of the Canadiens, while also playing with the Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.

Pacioretty made Michigan history in 2024 when he surpassed his former head coach Red Berenson in career NHL points (681). He's also the Michigan leader in NHL goals scored (335) and games played (939).

"Bringing in a guy like Max is huge for us," Naurato said. "He's been through it all in the NHL and knows what it takes to play and lead at the highest level. Our players are going to learn a ton from the way he sees the game, how he prepares and how he carries himself. It's exciting to have that kind of experience around every day."

{allcanada} Josh Hartnett Taken To Hospital Following Car Crash In Newfoundland, Canada While Filming Netflix Series

Josh Hartnett

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Josh Hartnett was involved in a collision with a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary patrol car in St. Johns, last week, the CBC reports.

Hartnett was in St. Johns shooting Netflix's untitled Newfoundland series and reportedly was on his way home from the set when the vehicles collided last Thursday. Hartnett was a passenger in the vehicle and both he and the driver were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but according to police cited by CBC, neither was seriously hurt. The officer in the police vehicle also was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Hartnett's rep Susan Patricola says the actor was checked out at the hospital and released, went home and returned to work. Production on the show was not affected.

Details of the crash are not known.

Deadline has reached out to Netflix and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and we will update this post when/if we hear back.

Hartnett stars in and is executive producing the six-episode untitled Newfoundland limited series, which takes place and is filming in Newfoundland, Canada.

In the series, when a mysterious sea creature terrorizes a remote Newfoundland town, a hard-bitten fisherman (Hartnett) must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.

Hartnett previously starred in the "Beyond the Sea"episode of Black Mirror and co-starred in the Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer. He headlined Trap and Fight or Flight and next stars in Verity opposite Anne Hathaway.

{allcanada} Jets’ Samberg out six to eight weeks with broken wrist, Hellebuyck Leaves Practice

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel says defenceman Dylan Samberg will miss six to eight weeks due to a broken wrist.

Samberg, 26, appeared to suffer the injury in the second period of Saturday's game against the Calgary Flames.

The Saginaw, Mich., native scored six goals and added 14 assists in 60 games last season.

He was originally selected 43rd overall by the Jets in the 2017 NHL Draft and has registered nine goals and 51 points in 216 NHL games.

Hellebuyck Leaves Practice

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck left the ice Monday as he was 'not feeling right', Arniel said. The head coach is unsure whether or not the reigning Vezina and Hart Trophy winner will play tomorrow's game against the Minnesota Wild.

Hellebuyck left the ice prior to the start of the main skate and skated off after squaring up for a shot. He has not appeared in any of the Jets' four preseason games.

{allcanada} NHL sees benefits to changing landscape after NCAA allows CHL players to compete at U.S. colleges

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The NCAA's decision allowing Canadian Hockey League players to compete at the U.S. college level for the first time won't alter how the NHL evaluates draft-eligible talent.

Wherever players are competing, the scouts will be there, NHL Central Scouting chief Dan Marr said.

What Marr envisions changing as a result of the NCAA's ruling is players having more freedom to chose their development path, which should benefit NHL teams.

"It's going to be better for the game. It's certainly better for players that they have these options and these opportunities," Marr said. "And NHL teams now have more development options for the players, which they didn't have before."

The NCAA's ruling in November prompted a massive redistribution of talent across North America's junior and college ranks. College Hockey Insider reported that nearly 325 CHL players have committed to play at Division I college programs this year and beyond.

Highlighting the group is Gavin McKenna. The long-projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL draft left the Western Hockey League after two-plus seasons to play at Penn State this year. The Nittany Lions open the season Friday at Arizona State.

The NCAA's ruling also opened a pool of players previously not available to CHL teams. Previously, teenagers had no choice but to play in the USHL or Canadian Junior A ranks to maintain their college eligibility. Now they're free to play in the CHL's three leagues — Western, Ontario and Quebec Maritime — without restriction.

The NHL has already responded by standardizing how long teams retain the rights to drafted prospects. The limit is now when the player turns 22. Previously, the rules differed, with teams having two or three years to sign CHL draft picks, and four years for USHL and high schoolers.

CHL players should benefit the most by having the chance to further their development in college. How many take advantage of the opportunity remains to be seen.

NHL teams are walking a careful line in advising prospects.

"It's their career, their development. And a lot of time there isn't a clear best path," Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said. "Of course, we're going to have input into that, but we don't push one way or the other. There's benefits to both."

New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald said the college option for CHL players has the potential of altering his philosophy on late-round draft selections. Where before he mostly avoided CHL players because of the smaller signing window, Fitzgerald might target more under the new standard.

"I've got a couple of kids where college would have been great for them," Fitzgerald said. "Go put your skills on display. Go get in the weight room and get pushed around by 24- and 25-year-olds. There's a lot of value in that."

Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger worried how the influx of CHL players to the college ranks will reduce the number of roster spots previously reserved for U.S.-born players.

"I'm torn," said Oettinger, who is from Minnesota and spent three years competing in the USHL with USA Hockey's developmental team before moving on to Boston University.

"The junior thing, I think it's great. He's going to make college hockey really cool," Oettinger said of McKenna. "But then, some of my best friends are the 20-year-old guys that played in the USHL that now won't get a scholarship because all these young studs from Canada are coming in."

With so many moving parts, the NHL is more than a casual observer, deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

"Obviously, the who landscape has changed dramatically, and I think it will continue to be dynamic in terms of the changes that are happening," Daly said. "There will be some normalcy at some point in time, and we'll see what that produces."

The Calgary Stampeders have acquired defensive lineman Lorenzo Mauldin IV from the Ottawa Redblacks on Sunday in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 CFL Draft.

Mauldin, 32, has 26 defensive tackles and two sacks through 14 games with the Redblacks this season.

"We're very excited to have Lorenzo on the team," said Stampeders general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson in a statement. "We've seen firsthand that he is one of the premier defensive linemen in the league."

The 6-foot-4 lineman has been a premier defensive force throughout his six-season career, landing the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2022 and was named a league all-star in 2022 and 2024.

Mauldin has 163 defensive tackles and 36 sacks in 90 career CFL games split between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Redblacks.

The Stampeders sit in second place in the West Division with an 8-6 record and are four points behind the Saskatchewan Roughriders for top spot with four games remaining in the regular season.

BEIJING (AP) — French Open winner Coco Gauff was forced to go the distance against Leylah Fernandez before closing out a tight three-setter 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 on Sunday to advance to the third round at the China Open.

The defending champion and a firm crowd favorite in Beijing overcame a second-set stumble and then struggled to serve out the match in the third, before breaking Fernandez in the 12th game of the deciding set to clinch it.

Gauff will next face No. 16 Belinda Bencic or Australian Priscilla Hon in the WTA 1000-series tournament.

In earlier matches Sunday, Eva Lys beat No. 10 Elena Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 and American McCartney Kessler was leading Barbora Krejcikova 1-6, 7-5, 3-0 when the Czech player retired from the match.

The tournament is being held concurrently with an ATP 500 men's tournament.

Second-seeded Alexander Zverev rallied from a break down in the deciding set to defeat 37th-ranked Corentin Moutet 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to set up a quarterfinal matchup against Daniil Medvedev, who got past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-3.

A day after becoming the latest tennis star to make an apology to Chinese fans, Lorenzo Musetti had a straight-sets victory over tour veteran Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3 in a second-round match.

Earlier, Learner Tien beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2 to set up a meeting with the No. 9-ranked Musetti in the quarterfinals.

Japan Open: Alcaraz's record

Carlos Alcaraz comfortably defeated Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Japan Open with his 65th match win of the season to equal his personal-best tally in a single season, according to the ATP Tour. He also had 65 wins in 2023.

"It's great to go through, to play another semifinal," the 22-year-old Alcaraz said. "It's special because it's the first time I am playing here in Japan and here in Tokyo, so to reach the semifinals in my first appearance is something great."

Alcaraz will next face Casper Ruud, the fourth-seeded Norwegian who defeated Aleksandar Vukic 6-3, 6-2.

{allcanada} Stolarz signs 4-year, $15 million contract with Maple Leafs

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Anthony Stolarz signed a four-year, $15 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday. It begins next season and has an average annual value of $3.75 million.

The 31-year-old goalie missed nearly two months last season while recovering from knee surgery. He played an NHL career-high 34 games (33 starts) and went 21-8-3 with a 2.14 goals-against average, .926 save percentage and four shutouts.

"It's exciting for sure," Stolarz said in a video posted by the Maple Leafs. "It was something I wanted to wrap up before the season starts. I'm very excited to be a part of the Maple Leafs organization for the next few years here, and I'm looking forward to getting the season started."

It's the first NHL contract Stolarz has signed that is longer than two years.

"I think that's kind of the goal for every player in this league," Stolarz told NHL.com last week. "You know, it's tough to make it, but it's even tougher to stay. I've obviously learned that throughout my career. I've been on waivers a few times, I've been traded, so for me to be able to potentially call a place home for more than a year or two would be huge for me.

"I'll let my agent kind of work things out. I will say we've had some good talks, but once the season starts, I kind of just want to focus on that and just worry about our end goal, which is the Stanley Cup."

A second-round pick (No. 45) by the Philadelphia Flyers at the 2012 NHL Draft, Stolarz is 64-39-12 with a 2.55 GAA, .918 save percentage and 12 shutouts in 142 regular-season games (116 starts) with the Flyers, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Panthers and Maple Leafs, and 4-2 with a 2.43 GAA and an .894 save percentage in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games (seven starts).

Toronto plays its season opener on Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens.
