Canada's Leylah Fernandez retired from her first-round match against Germany's Tatjana Maria at the San Diego Open with an apparent shoulder injury in the second set on Tuesday.
The No. 8 seed, from Laval, Ont., was down 4-0 in the second set after winning a lengthy first set 7-6 (7).
Stephanie Myles of OpenCourt.ca reported Fernandez, 21, received treatment on her left shoulder after the first-set tiebreak.
Fernandez, ranked 32nd in the world, was playing her first match in North America this year.
It marks the first time she has lost a first-round match in four tournaments in 2024.
The injury for Fernandez continued a bit of a rough week for Canadian tennis. Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime lost first-round matches in Dubai and Acapulco, Mexico, respectively.
Canadian teen Marina Stakusic won her first career WTA 500 match over a fellow qualifier on Monday in San Diego. Her second-round match will be Wednesday or Thursday.
