The Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing in reinforcements in the aftermath of another goaltender suffering an injury, signing Keith Petruzzelli to an NHL deal, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
The Maple Leafs made the news official Sunday signing Petruzzelli to a two-year, entry-level contract.
Starter Ilya Samsonov left Saturday's game against the Boston Bruins with a knee injury.
Petruzzelli has a 6-0 record this season with the Marlies posting a 2.31 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. Since the 23-year-old was playing on an AHL deal, the Leafs had to sign Petruzzelli to an NHL deal so that he can join the team.
With Nicolas Aube-Kubel claimed off waivers by the Washington Capitals, Toronto had a contract slot freed up to sign Petruzzelli as they had 50 players signed to NHL deals.
After Saturday's game, head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that Samsonov was injured during the penalty shot and had no update on his condition. It is not known if Samsonov will be able to join the team on the road where they will play the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday with Erik Kallgren scheduled to start in goal.
