Centre Andrew Copp has signed a five-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, Sportsnet can confirm.

The move brings Copp close to his hometown of Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Winnipeg Jets dealt Copp to the New York Rangers prior to last season's trade deadline when they couldn't come to terms on an extension with the pending unrestricted free agent.

Copp cracked the 20-goal and 30-assist marks for the first time in his career last season, finishing with a combined 21 goals and 32 assists.

The American averaged more than a point per game (18 points in 16 games) after being traded to the Rangers.

Copp added six goals and eight assists in 20 Stanley Cup Playoffs games as the Rangers advanced to the Eastern Conference Final.
