{allcanada} Allvin hired as Canucks general manager, was assistant GM with Penguins

Patrik Allvin was hired as general manager of the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday.

Allvin, who was the Pittsburgh Penguins assistant GM, spent 16 seasons with the Penguins and won the Stanley Cup three times (2009, 2016, 2017).

"It's a big honor for me taking on this opportunity and to work with [Canucks president of hockey operations] Jim Rutherford, a Hall of Famer, again," Allvin said. "Obviously to be part of the Vancouver Canucks, [with] a lot of Swedish alumni players there, you see in the ring of honor there what they mean to the franchise over the years. I'm extremely excited and honored and proud to be part of the Vancouver Canucks here moving forward."

Allvin spent seven seasons (2014-21) working for Rutherford with the Penguins. Allvin served as general manager after Rutherford left the Penguins on Jan. 27, 2021, because of personal reasons. He was considered for the permanent position, but Ron Hextall was hired on Feb. 9.

"I am grateful and humbled for this opportunity and want to thank Jim and the [Canucks owner Francesco] Aquilini family for their belief in me," Allvin said. "Leading an NHL team in Canada is an honor and building a championship team in Vancouver is our goal. Jim has assembled a diverse and talented hockey operations group in Vancouver, and I look forward to working closely with all of them as we build a team that fans will be proud of and will ultimately compete again for a Stanley Cup."

The Canucks hired Emilie Castonguay as assistant general manager on Monday, the first woman to hold the role in the organization. Castonguay was formerly a player agent.

Jim Benning was fired as Canucks GM along with coach Travis Green on Dec. 5. Rutherford was hired as president of hockey operations Dec. 9 and served as GM while he led the search for someone to fill that role.

"Working with Jim, getting to know him seven years ago, I know how detailed and competitive he is," Allvin said. "He's always a forward thinker and he really empowers staff. Looking back in Pittsburgh, and even back to Carolina, the people he taught along the way here that have moved on to key positions around the League. Having Jim there, I think it's a great fit for the Vancouver Canucks and myself."

Vancouver was 9-15-2 and last in the Pacific Division when Benning and Green were fired; they have gone 9-4-3 under coach Bruce Boudreau, who was hired to replace Green.

Allvin, a native of Falun, Sweden, began his career as a European scout for the Montreal Canadiens in 2002, spending four seasons with them, before joining the Penguins in the same role. He was a scout for Pittsburgh for six seasons. He then served as the director of European scouting for the Penguins for five seasons, becoming the team's director of amateur scouting in 2017. He was named assistant general manager Nov. 4, 2020.

"Patrik and I worked together for seven years, and I believe he will be an excellent general manager," Rutherford said. "He has won three Stanley Cups and has experience at all levels of hockey operations. He is intelligent, works hard, makes strong decisions and I believe he will help us build a winning team in Vancouver."
