{allcanada} Allen out eight weeks for Canadiens with lower-body injury

Jake Allen will be out eight weeks for the Montreal Canadiens because of a lower-body injury.

The goalie had an MRI on Monday after sustaining the injury in the first period of a 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 12.

The update on Allen comes after the Canadiens said Monday that goalie Carey Price, who has not played this season, would have to restart rehabilitation on his surgically repaired knee.

Sam Montembeault (16 games this season) and Cayden Primeau (four) are the current goalies on Montreal's active roster.

Montembeault has started six of the Canadiens' past eight games, including a 48-save performance in a 5-3 win at the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The 25-year-old made 49 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss at the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

"I've worked hard and this is the first time in my career that I've played so many games," Montembeault said. "I don't know what the situation is with Jake but I will continue to work hard."

He's 2-6-4 with a 3.73 goals-against average and .904 save percentage this season.

"With the news that we got today with Jake, Carey being out, it's a great opportunity for him," coach Dominque Ducharme said about Montembeault after the game Thursday.

Michael McNiven was recalled from Laval of the American Hockey League to the taxi squad on Jan. 13.

Allen is 5-16-2 with a 3.15 GAA and .901 save percentage in 24 starts this season for the Canadiens (8-25-6), who are in last place in the NHL.
