Canadian forward Justin Sourdif has been suspended one game at the World Junior Hockey Championship for an illegal check to the head of Czechia defenceman Jiri Tchacek.
The incident occurred late in the third period of Canada's 6-3 win on Sunday. As Tchacek passed the puck near the boards behind the Czechia net, Sourdif finished his check with his shoulder hitting Tchaeck in his head.
In a statement, the IIHF said the suspension was awarded because "Sourdif recklessly endangered Tichacek" and "the check was delivered late, meaning Sourdif initiated contact well after Tchacek released the puck from his possession and therefore had sufficient time to alter his trajectory beforehand."
Sourdif, a Florida Panthers prospect, will miss Tuesday's game against Austria and is eligible to return Wednesday against Germany.
