Cole Caufield is day to day for the Canadiens after he was pulled from their Red vs. White intrasquad game after warmups for precautionary reasons.
The 20-year-old forward had two shots on goal in 17:23 of ice time during Montreal's 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the preseason opener at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Saturday.
The Canadiens will be without forward Mike Hoffman (lower body) for at least the first week of the regular season. The injury occurred before Hoffman got to Montreal and he's expected to be sidelined up to four weeks. Montreal opens the season at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 13.
Forward Brendan Gallagher is expected to play in the third preseason game (Oct. 1), coach Dominique Ducharme said Saturday. Gallagher has been absent from camp for personal reasons.
