{allcanada} Laine won't play for Jets at Maple Leafs because of upper-body injury

Patrik Laine will not play for the Winnipeg Jets against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday (7 p.m. ET, TVAS, SNO, TSN3, NHL.TV) because of an upper-body injury.

The forward is day to day. He left the morning skate early in addition to practice Sunday.

Laine scored two goals, including the overtime winner, and had an assist when the Jets opened their season with a 4-3 victory against the Calgary Flames in Winnipeg on Thursday.

"There wasn't anything in the game Thursday he was worried about," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "He was aware of it, but it was minor. He came out Sunday but couldn't warm it up. It couldn't get to the point where he felt comfortable with it."

The Jets start a three-game road trip against Toronto before playing at the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday and Thursday.

"We've got to get this thing healed," Maurice said. "I don't have a timeline for you, I'm not looking at this unless something changes as a long-term thing. The day to day is an honest assessment of where he is at but it's going to get questioned because we play six of the next nine days. We want to get him back in the lineup. You wish you had more time between games to let it heal but we don't. We won't put him back in until he's confident he can be the player that he was."

Winnipeg will be without defensemen Dylan DeMelo, whose wife gave birth to a baby on Thursday, and Tucker Poolman (COVID-19 protocol) for the trip.

Defenseman Ville Heinola and forward Kristian Vesalainen were recalled from the taxi squad.
