Jeff Petry signed a four-year, $25 million contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens on Friday, beginning with the 2021-22 season. It has an average annual value of $6.25 million.
The 32-year-old defenseman could have become an unrestricted free agent after next season. He agreed to terms on a six-year contract with the Canadiens on June 2, 2015.
"From the day I got here five years ago, it's been great," Petry told the Canadiens website Aug. 26. "The city was very welcoming to me and my family, and to experience my first playoffs that first year was a big reason why I re-signed with the team. My wife and I have made it home over the last five years."
This season, Petry scored at least 40 points (11 goals, 29 assists) for the third consecutive season, led the Canadiens in total ice time (1,678:52), was second in ice time per game (23:39) to defenseman Shea Weber (24:00) and scored game-winning goals in Games 1 and 3 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Canadiens, who finished with the lowest points percentage (.500) of any team to qualify for the postseason, entered as the No. 12 seed and defeated the No. 5-seeded Penguins in four games in the best-of-5 Qualifiers. As the No. 8 seed in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference First Round, they lost in six games to the No. 1-seeded Philadelphia Flyers.
Petry led Montreal in ice time per game (25:27) in 10 postseason games and was one of three Canadiens players with at least 30 hits (Ben Chiarot, 38; Jesperi Kotkaniemi, 36).
"For a while, I was searching for consistency in my game," Petry said. "My approach game in and game out has been a focus of mine. I've worked hard to become a complete two-way defenseman and offensive defenseman. It's something I've worked on and worked with the coaching staff about what they expect from me. I've just focused on that from the beginning of the year."
