Carey Price skated with Montreal Canadiens teammates at their practice facility in Brossard, Quebec, on Monday for the first time since the beginning of Phase 2 of the NHL Return to Play Plan.
The goalie returned to Montreal on June 29. He was with his family in Kennewick, Washington, after the NHL paused the season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He went 27-25-6 this season with a 2.79 goals-against average and .909 save percentage, which was 32nd in the NHL among goalies who played at least 20 games.
The Canadiens were 31-31-9 (.500 points percentage) in the regular season and will enter the Stanley Cup Qualifiers as the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference. They will play the No. 5 seed, the Pittsburgh Penguins (40-23-6, .623), in one of eight best-of-5 series. Montreal will try to advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017, when it lost to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference First Round.
"I think that our preparation over the next month will be paramount," Price said June 25. "It's the old adage, 'Anything can happen.' I know we're a pretty underrated team. We're a very streaky team. We have proven that we can get really hot, and that's what it's all about in the playoffs."
Phase 3, which begins with the opening of training camps in the local markets of the 24 teams participating in the qualifiers, is scheduled for July 13. Teams will then travel July 26 to one of two centralized hub cities, where they will begin Phase 4, the resumption of play, with the qualifiers starting Aug. 1. The hub cities have not been announced.
