{allcanada} Canadiens trade Ilya Kovalchuk to Capitals for third-round pick

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Ilya Kovalchuk to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Montreal is retaining half the salary in the deal, meaning Washington is only paying Kovalchuk roughly $75,000 for the rest of the season.

"Ilya is a talented offensive player who we feel will provide us with additional depth and flexibility up front," Caps general manager Brian MacLellan said in a release. "He is a skilled forward who can make plays and contribute to our offensive game."

Kovalchuk, 36, played 22 games with the Canadiens this season, collecting 13 points (six goals, seven assists). Three of those goals were game-winners. He picked up an additional three goals and six assists for the Los Angeles Kings in 2019-20 before being waived by the club in December.

The Russian was the first-overall selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2001 NHL Draft.
