Alexis Lafreniere, projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, sustained a left leg injury for Canada and needed to be helped off the ice during the second period of a Group B preliminary-round game against Russia in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship at Ostravar Arena in Ostravar, Czech Republic on Saturday.
The 18-year-old center, who had four points (one goal, three assists) in a 6-4 win against the United States on Thursday, skated into the Russia zone and attempted to get a shot off but fell awkwardly after colliding with Russia goalie Amir Miftakhov at 1:36 of the second period.
Lafreniere remained on the ice for several minutes and couldn't put any weight on his leg before being helped off the ice by teammates. Lafreniere has 70 points (23 goals, 47 assists) and 29 power-play points (two goals, 27 assists) in 32 games in his third season with Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
He had one goal in five games in the 2019 World Junior Championship.
