{allcanada} X-rays negative after Oilers’ McDavid injures leg vs. Flames

The Edmonton Oilers 2018-19 campaign was yet another disappointment and it concluded on a sour note when Connor McDavid left the ice early in Saturday's season finale against the Calgary Flames with what looked to be a serious left leg injury.

Thankfully for the player and team, the Oilers announced following a 3-1 victory that McDavid's X-rays came back negative and that he will undergo an MRI when he returns to Edmonton.

McDavid was skating hard to the net early in the second period, fending off Norris Trophy frontrunner Mark Giordano, when he was taken down and crashed hard into Flames netminder Mike Smith.

The two-time Art Ross Trophy winner's left shin slammed into one of the posts and McDavid remained on the ice for some time as he was attended to by medical staff.

While the extent of McDavid's injury is unclear, it did appear he mouthed "It's broken" to the trainer with whom he was speaking. The 22-year-old did not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the ice and down the tunnel.

The play was somewhat reminiscent of when Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos suffered a broken right leg in 2013 after his leg slammed forcefully into a net post.
