Zach Hyman likely will miss the start of next season with the Toronto Maple Leafs because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained during their seven-game Eastern Conference First Round loss to the Boston Bruins.
Hyman will have surgery to repair the tear Monday and is expected to need at least six months to recover.
The 26-year-old forward scored one goal in seven games against the Bruins. He said he was injured when he was trying to check Boston forward Brad Marchand at the end of Game 4.
Hyman's 18:15 of ice time in Game 7 was fourth among Maple Leafs forwards, after John Tavares (21:19), Mitchell Marner (20:53) and Auston Matthews (18:48).
He set personal NHL-bests in goals (21) and points (41) in 71 regular-season games. A fifth-round pick (No. 123) in the 2010 NHL Draft, he has 115 points (50 goals, 65 assists) in 251 games over four seasons with Toronto.
