{allcanada} March 1: Gretzky sets NHL career record for assists

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: March 1

1988: Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers officially becomes the greatest playmaker in NHL history.

Gretzky sets up a first-period goal by longtime linemate Jari Kurri for his 1,050th assist, passing Gordie Howe for No. 1 on the League's all-time list. The record-setting assist comes late in Gretzky's ninth NHL season, 17 fewer than Howe.

Gretzky also scores a goal 18 seconds before assist No. 1,050, helping the Oilers defeat the visiting Los Angeles Kings 5-3.

MORE MOMENTS

1919: Newsy Lalonde of the Montreal Canadiens sets a Stanley Cup Playoff record by scoring five goals in a 6-3 win against the visiting Ottawa Senators. Lalonde still shares the record, which has been matched four times.

1968: The first-year Philadelphia Flyers find themselves without a home when the roof of the Spectrum blows off. The Flyers are forced to play the final month of the season on the road, with their "home" games moved to Toronto, New York and Quebec City. Despite that, they finish first in the West Division.

1969: Brothers Bob Plager, Barclay Plager and Bill Plager all play together for the first time for the St. Louis Blues against the Montreal Canadiens. The only brother to make the score sheet is Bob, whose penalty 3:42 into the game leads to a power-play goal by Yvan Cournoyer. The Canadiens defeat the Blues 3-0 at St. Louis Arena.

1970: Charlie Burns becomes the final player/coach in NHL history when he dresses and plays for the Minnesota North Stars in an 8-0 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Met Center. The victory ends Minnesota's 20-game winless streak (0-15-5). Burns remains Minnesota's player/coach for the final month of the season.

1989: Steve Yzerman becomes the first player in Detroit Red Wings history with 60 goals in a season when he scores during a 6-5 win against the New York Islanders at Joe Louis Arena. He's the 11th player in NHL history to score 60 in one season.

1993: Pavel Bure scores twice to become the first player in the 23-year history of the Vancouver Canucks to have 50 goals in a season. The Canucks defeat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 in a neutral-site game played in Hamilton, Ontario.

2003: Barry Trotz of the Nashville Predators sets an NHL record for the most games coached with an expansion team from its inception with a 5-4 overtime win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. It's Trotz's 392nd game with the Predators, breaking Terry Crisp's record of 391 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

2014: Jaromir Jagr of the New Jersey Devils becomes the seventh player in NHL history to score 700 goals. Jagr reaches the milestone with his goal at 3:31 of the second period in a 6-1 win against the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Jagr also ties Marcel Dionne for ninth all-time with his 1,040th NHL assist when he set up a power-play goal by Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky at 8:07 of the second.

2018: David Poile becomes the winningest general manager in NHL history when the Nashville Predators defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 at Rogers Place. It's the 1,320th victory by a Poile-run team, one more than Glen Sather. It's Poile's 726th win with the Predators after 594 with the Washington Capitals from 1982-97.

{allcanada} Auger-Aliassime downs Ramos-Vinolas, advances to Sao Paulo quarters

SAO PAOLO, Brazil – Montreal teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his impressive run on clay courts Thursday with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) win over Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas at the Brasil Open.

Auger-Aliassime, currently ranked 60th on the ATP Tour, fired 16 aces in the match that took two hours 10 minutes to complete.

The 18-year-old Canadian won 85 per cent of first-serve points but only 40 per cent on second serve.

But Auger-Aliassime kept the pressure on his veteran opponent. Though he only broke Ramos-Vinolas once, he had eight break-point opportunities against the Spaniard.

Ramos-Vinolas, a former world No. 17 currently ranked 86th, converted one of his two break-point chances.

Auger-Aliassime will face Laslo Djere in the quarterfinals after the Serbian downed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2).

{allcanada} Richardson scores 4 goals in Coyotes' 5-2 win over Canucks

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brad Richardson didn't take his normal pregame nap Thursday - and he might consider passing up the extra shut-eye moving forward.

Richardson scored four goals to lead Arizona to a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver, when the Coyotes won their fifth straight while completing a four-game season sweep of the Canucks, further tightening the Western Conference playoff race.

''I was (angry) when I got here because I hadn't napped, but maybe I'll keep that trend going,'' Richardson said. ''I got punched in the face the last game and I can't breathe out of my nose, so I think it was something with that.''

Richardson scored twice in the first period, recorded his hat trick in the second period and finished the scoring late in the third after the Canucks closed to 4-2.

Vinnie Hinostroza and Richard Panik had three assists apiece - all on goals by Richardson - and Oliver Ekman-Larsson had two assists.

Richardson has a single-season career-high 16 goals.

''He had a great game,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. ''Since I took the job here, he's been probably the guy I can rely on, on and off the ice. So glad we signed him. These are the type of games . it seemed like got sloppy, he would go out there and kind of settle our team down.''

Richardson had the Coyotes' first four-goal game since Keith Tkachuk did it on March 20, 1997.

Richardson's only other game with at least three goals came on Oct. 23, 2010, while with the Los Angeles Kings. He had 14 goals with Colorado in 2006-07, his first full season and had 12 goals in 47 games with the Coyotes last season.

''It's a long time coming in between,'' Richardson said. ''You want to score. It was just one of those nights where I felt we had the puck all the time and our line was kind of clicking and we were in the right spot at the right time.

''They made some great plays for me.''

Tanner Pearson and Antoine Roussel scored for the Canucks, who have lost five of six.

Pearson's goal was 10th this season, and his first for the Canucks since being acquired in from Los Angeles on Feb. 14.

Arizona's Darcy Kuemper made 37 saves while starting for the 10th time in the last 11 games. He is 7-1 in his last eight

Thatcher Demko made 19 saves in his second start of the season for Vancouver, his first appearance since a 4-3 home victory over Buffalo on Jan. 18. No. 1 goaltender Jacob Markstrom had played the previous seven.

Richardson scored twice in the first period around a breakaway goal by Pearson to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead.

Richardson scored 11 seconds after exiting the penalty box following a two-minute minor, skating in alone on the left side and beat Demko high on the stick side at 11:58 of the first period.

He also scored on a scramble in front of the net in the first period and after a deft drop pass from Panik in the second. He tipped in a pass from Hinostroza for his final goal at 8:03 of the third period.

''I thought we showed a little immaturity in our game tonight,'' Vancouver coach Travis Green said. ''We weren't smart enough with our effort and gave them a couple of goals that you can't give up at this time of the year.''

STEPAN INJURED

Coyotes forward Derek Stepan was helped off the ice with an apparent left leg injury at 17:29 of the third period after colliding with a Vancouver player. He will be re-evaluated Friday, Tocchet said.

''We've been trying to stay positive all year,'' Tocchet said. ''Hopefully (we'll) get some good news. We can't really speculate. We'll know a little more tomorrow. We'll deal with it tomorrow.''

Stepan is third on the team with 13 goals and also is considered one of the team leaders.

NOTES: Forward Conor Garland played his first game since signing a two-year, $1.55 million contract extension Wednesday that will keep him with the Coyotes through the 2020-21 season. Garland has 12 goals and three assists in 37 games. ... The Canucks completed the eighth of their 11 back-to-back sets this season. They are 7-8-1, 3-5-0 in the second game. ... Vancouver was 0 for 3 on the power play and has converted only one of its last 21 and two of its last 35 attempts.

UP NEXT

Canucks: Finish a three-game road trip in Las Vegas, which has three points in the first two games between the two this season.

Coyotes: Play host to Detroit in the fourth game of a seven-game homestand Saturday. Red Wings defenseman Mike Green had a goal and two assists in the first of two meetings this season, a 6-1 victory Nov. 13.

{allcanada} Tavares honored by Islanders, jeered by fans in return to Long Island

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The crowd started chanting "We don't need you" before John Tavares took the ice for warmups at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday. It only got tougher from there for the Toronto Maple Leafs center and former New York Islanders captain.

"Obviously I don't expect it to be a very welcoming return," Tavares said in his pregame press conference in front of about 50 media members and 10 television or website cameras

He was right. It was a relentless display of displeasure from the Islanders fans, one that didn't stop even for a video tribute to Tavares at 9:59 of the first period.

It was a touching video detailing many important on-ice and off-ice moments of Tavares' time with the Islanders, but the majority of the vocal fans greeted it with name-calling chants, loud boos and general unpleasantness.

Tavares didn't let it bother him. He came off the bench at the conclusion of the video to raise his stick and applaud the fans.

"We don't need you," they responded.

Tavares played nine seasons with the Islanders after they selected him No. 1 in the 2009 NHL Draft. He repeatedly said how much he loved being a member of the Islanders and how much he was hoping to stay with them, but he left in the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, signing seven-year, $77 million contract with his hometown Maple Leafs on July 1.

Islanders fans took it as a shot against them with many expressing their feelings on social media. The sting clearly hasn't gone away judging by their actions Thursday, with their first chance to tell Tavares how they felt in person.

Tavares never appeared bothered by the greeting that started in warmups.

At one point, Tavares and Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck skated past each other through the the center-ice face-off circle, each on his side of the red line. Clutterbuck gave Tavares a stick tap and a head nod.

Tavares, who also looked down toward the New York side many times, said he knew it would be an emotional return for him because of how much the Islanders meant to him in his time with the organization.

"At the same time, I mean, I can only control what I can control," Tavares said.

The chanting and booing aimed at Tavares only got louder as the Maple Leafs came back on the ice for the start of the game. Tavares took his first shift 18 seconds into the first period and was loudly booed as soon as he hopped over the boards to take a face-off against Casey Cizikas.

Once he went to the bench, the fans went back to loudly chanting "Let's go Islanders" before starting up the "We don't need you" chant again. Their booing, chanting and cheering seemed to change with every change of possession.

{allcanada} McDavid scores, Oilers beat skidding Senators 4-2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Connor McDavid scored a slick goal, Mikko Koskinen made 35 saves and the Edmonton Oilers beat the league-worst Ottawa Senators 4-2 on Thursday night.

Sam Gagner, Colby Cave and Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, who stopped a two-game skid.

Chris Tierney and Mark Borowiecki scored for the Senators, who lost their sixth straight, and Craig Anderson stopped 22 shots in his ninth straight defeat.

It was the first home game for Ottawa since Mark Stone was traded to Vegas, but thanks to McDavid the Senators had one of their biggest crowds of the season.

Edmonton was up two goals after two periods and took a 3-1 lead 1:46 into the third when Cave took advantage of a giveaway by Christian Jaros for his second of the season.

Ottawa made it a one-goal game when Borowiecki scored his first of the season at the seven-minute mark, but Kassian iced it for the Oilers with an empty-net goal.

The Senators appeared to tie the game at 10:38, but the goal was waived off because Colin White knocked the puck down with a high stick before scoring.

Trailing 1-0, the Oilers tied it in the second when McDavid scored his 33rd of the season. McDavid dug the puck out of Oscar Lindberg's skates and then beat Anderson high from in close with a deke to the forehand.

Edmonton took a 2-1 lead late in the period as Thomas Chabot left Gagner all alone. Gagner took a great pass from Ty Rattie for his fourth of the season.

Anderson was busy from the start, making a couple big saves on McDavid early on, but it was the Senators who scored first.

Tierney scored his first in 19 games as he came from behind the net, grabbed a loose puck in front and beat Koskinen through the legs.

NOTES: Rudolfs Balcers missed the game with an illness, while Christian Wolanin was a healthy scratch for the Senators. ... Edmonton scratched Kevin Gravel, Alexander Petrovic and Kyle Brodziak.

UP NEXT

Oilers: Visit Columbus on Saturday.

Senators: At league-leading Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

{allcanada} Genie Bouchard’s Super Bowl Date Bet Tale In Works At Fox 2000

Genie Bouchard

Fox 2000 has picked up Jonathan A. Abrams' romantic comedy film pitch inspired by the true story of how a random guy scored a date with tennis player and 2014 Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard after winning a Super Bowl bet. Douglas Banker of Five All in the Fifth Entertainment is producing the project along with State Street Pictures, the company behind The Hate U Give.

It all started with a tweet in 2017 during Super Bowl LI. The Atlanta Falcons had the lead over the New England Patriots and a confident Bouchard tweeted "I knew Atlanta would win btw," to which a random Patriots fan named John Goehrke responded, "[I]f [P]atriots win we go on a date?" Bouchard agreed (you can see the tweet below) and the Tom Brady-led squad ultimately took the victory with the final score of 34-28. The tennis champ honored the bet several weeks later and flew Goehrke to New York to attend a Brooklyn Nets game, where they sat courtside at the Barclays Center. The two continued to date over the following year and even attended Super Bowl LII together, where the Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The film version centers on dating and love in the modern digital age, asking if a relationship born on social media can survive the glare of the public eye.

Bouchard will serve as an executive producer

Abrams penned the script for Diplomats, the film inspired by Dennis Rodman's 2013 mission trip to North Korea, which 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment are producing. He also has developed television dramas for A&E, FOX, ABC, NBC, and The CW.

Abrams is repped by Mosaic and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.

I will also point out that the "test" option in the preferences is pretty much useless. Mine always that TCP and UDP are unreachable for me, even when in fact everything is working just fine.

You can probably find instructions on how to do it for your router if you do some googleing.

Shakespeer is very old but I haven't found a single other Mac Hub client that works, so it's what I use. I expect next year when Mac OS stops supporting 32-bit applications I'm going to just be out of luck unless I want to run an entire Virtual machine just to keep my hub software running (or I just don't upgrade but eventually I'll want/need to).

i recommend you visit https://sourceforge.net/projects/shakespeer/ and see if you can find a different DC++ App to use.

I wasn't too concerned about not having Shakespeer work on my Mac because I also have a PC and there's no problem with that.

You could try and PC emulator on your Mac to get a Windows client to work. Check this out https://www.iphonetopics.com/windows-emulator-for-mac/

{allcanada} TFC officially announces Altidore extension

Toronto FC confirmed Thursday that star striker Jozy Altidore is staying put.

The 29-year-old U.S. international has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Toronto through the 2022 season.

"This is my family, this club and this city," Altidore said in a statement. "The fans, from the first day, they accepted me, they gave me the right to show what I'm all about, and they took me in. We've built something great together and I'm really eager to see what's to come."

Altidore has 60 goals and 20 assists in 114 appearances for TFC in all competitions. He ranks second to the departed Sebastian Giovinco on TFC's all-time goal-scoring list and stands eighth on the all-time combined appearances list with 114.

He is one of nine players to have made at least 100 appearances for the club.

"Jozy expressed his desire to be here and the feeling was mutual. Our fans here love him and I hope he'll wear a TFC jersey for the rest of his career," Toronto president Bill Manning said in a statement. "Since coming to Toronto, Jozy has helped TFC win multiple championships, scoring so many clutch goals, including the biggest goal in our club's history. We look forward to more great moments."

On the international scene, Altidore has earned 110 caps and scored 41 goals for the U.S.

Altidore's decision to stay is welcome news after the sudden and unexpected departure of Giovinco and Spanish playmaker Victor Vazquez, who combined for 45 goals and 46 assists over the last two seasons.

Giovinco, a designated player like Altidore who was entering the last year of his contract, was unable to come to terms with Toronto and left for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal FC. Vazquez, who is 32 like Giovinco, went to Qatar's Al-Arabi SC.

Toronto, bundled out of the CONCACAF Champions League by Panama's Club Atletico Independiente de la Chorrera at the first hurdle, turns its attention to the MLS season which opens Saturday with a game at Philadelphia.

Toronto went from champion in 2017 (20-5-9, 69 points) to 19th in 2018 (10-18-16, 36 points).

Altidore ranked seventh in the league last season with total compensation of US$5 million, according to the MLS Players Union. Giovinco topped the league at $7.115 million while captain Michael Bradley, whose contract also expires at the end of 2019, was No. 2 at $6.5 million

When healthy, the U.S. international is a dominant force. The combination of his size and power and the guile and vision of Giovinco/Vazquez proved to be very dangerous.

The Toronto offence should be strengthened by the expected arrival of Spanish attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo from Belgium's KRC Genk in mid-March. Toronto is also looking to use targeted allocation money on one or two more recruits.

Altidore was drafted 17th overall by the MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls) in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. He spent two seasons in MLS before joining Spain's Villarreal CF in June 2008. He went on to play for England's Hull City, Turkey's Buraspor and AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands before moving to Sunderland in July 2013. He joined Toronto in January 2015.

He was an all-star 2015, 2017 and was named MLS Cup MVP 2017 when Toronto won the title.

Altidore has 45 goals and 12 assists in 88 regular-season games with Toronto. He has seven goals and four assists in 11 playoff matches.

{allcanada} Oilers’ Jesse Puljujarvi to undergo season-ending hip surgery

Jesse Puljujarvi's disastrous 2018-19 campaign has reached a disappointing conclusion, as the Edmonton Oilers winger is set to undergo season-ending hip surgery.

The team made an official announcement Thursday afternoon following an initial report from Jason Gregor of Oilers Nation.

Puljujarvi, who went for a second opinion Tuesday, hasn't played since Feb. 15 and was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury last week.

"This injury has been bothering Jesse for some time now and after careful consideration with Jesse, his agent and our medical staff, the best decision was to have the surgery and miss the remainder of the season," Oilers assistant general manager Keith Gretzky said in a statement. "We expect Jesse to rehabilitate and train throughout the summer and be 100 per cent ready to go for training camp in September."

The fourth-overall pick from 2016 had registered a mere four goals and five assists in 46 appearances with the Oilers this season while averaging 11:57 of ice-time per game. The 20-year-old also had two goals and two assists in four games with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.

{allcanada} Little fanfare, big heart: Hyman continues to humbly support SickKids

It was a grand gesture delivered in a most humble way. And just exactly what you would expect from Zach Hyman.

It was a grand gesture delivered in a most humble way. And just exactly what you would expect from Zach Hyman.

Earlier this year, Hyman, now in his fourth NHL season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, presented a cheque for $100,000 to the Hospital for Sick Children.

There was little fanfare or publicity surrounding the donation (the money was raised through Hyman's first annual charity golf tournament), which is exactly how the 26-year-old wanted it to be.

Hyman, along with a small group of friends, parents, children and others, stood together one floor above SickKids to share in the moment, as one cameraman took video and a lone photographer snapped pictures.

"Auston (Matthews) goes to SickKids all the time and he doesn't boast about it," said Hyman of his high-profile teammate. "A lot of our guys do that as well. You don't do this kind of thing for the publicity. You do it because you care and you want to make an impact. When you go to visit kids, you really see how much it means to them and to their families."

It also means a great deal to Hyman. Perhaps more.

"Sometimes, you go and the kids are in their hospital bed watching a hockey game," he said. "To go and see them, to see how positive they are in dealing with some very difficult circumstances, it puts everything into perspective for everybody."

Which is why his relationship with SickKids remains an important part of his life.

"It's really special," said Hyman. "I've been coming here since long before I was playing with the Maple Leafs. Going to see these kids and meeting their families, it's been really impactful for me. SickKids was one of the charities that we supported through the golf tournament. It's important for me to help out in any way I can."

Hyman sees the same commitment to giving back to the community within his own dressing room.

He's appreciative of each player's willingness to step up for a teammate's cause.

"It's all about helping one another," offered Hyman, whose second annual golf tournament will take place on July 29 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Aurora, Ontario. "You see more and more guys on our team doing charity events and we all support each other. You see how important it is for the guys to give back to the community. We're in such a privileged position to be playing the game we love, so it's important for us to be good role models to kids."

It's something Hyman reminds himself of each time he makes a visit to SickKids, often out of the view of the public eye.

What's the one that stays with him after he spends time with kids and their families?

"It always strikes me, with the kids, in how mature they are with understanding their situation and being so strong in dealing with it," said Hyman. "You learn a lot from spending time with them, how positive they are, the mindset they have you learn something every time you go there."

{allcanada} Tavares prepared for emotional return against Islanders

TORONTO -- John Tavares repeatedly stated over the course of last season his desire to remain with the New York Islanders, how he enjoyed living on Long Island, how he was hopeful everything was going to work out and he would still be with the only NHL team he'd ever played for.

Following a 6-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs center once again vehemently denied the belief by many New York fans that he planned all along to leave the Islanders to sign with his hometown team as a free agent on July 1, 2018.

"Well, I left," said Tavares, who will play as a visitor at Nassau Coliseum for the first time when the Islanders host the Maple Leafs on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN+, MSG+, TSN4, NHL.TV). "I think I had every right to go through the process that I went through. I tried to be open and honest when I made my decision.

"I had no idea what I was going to do until I made my decision. People can take it whatever way they want, but I'm just going to go out there and play and do what I have to do to be at my best. All I can do is control what I can control."

But Islanders fans grew nervous as last season wore on. As each day passed, the knot in their collective stomach became bigger and bigger. Their captain, the man most responsible for the lone Stanley Cup Playoff series win they've witnessed since 1993, could very well leave them as an unrestricted free agent.

Tavares did just that. He reached the window last summer that allowed him to speak with other teams, and the Maple Leafs were waiting.

Few in or outside the game know Tavares better than Oilers forward Sam Gagner, who was in Toronto to play against his longtime friend on Wednesday. Gagner, 29, and Tavares, 28, spent a good portion of their childhoods skating on Gagner's backdoor rink in nearby Oakville, Ontario, which was built by Gagner's father, former NHL forward Dave Gagner.

So when the all too popular notion arises that Tavares knew for years he would leave the Islanders to sign with his hometown team, Gagner can't help but shake his head.

"The narrative seems to be that his mind was made up to go to his childhood team from the get-go, but I know it was the hardest decision he's ever made," Gagner told NHL.com. "Until the final decision was made, he went through it a lot. He's a very meticulous person. He had a lot of good memories playing on the island, and I know he wanted to make it work there. At the end of the day, he got a chance to go to free agency and see what else was out there. He made a decision he thought was best for his family, but at no point was that decision made beforehand.

"I think in his mind, I think he was hoping it would work out [with the Islanders] right to the end. Then he heard what Toronto had to say and the opportunity he had ahead of him. I think that was a tough opportunity to pass up. I'm sure he's as happy as anyone the Islanders are doing well this year and that his friends in the dressing room are doing well. But at the end of the day, he has a great opportunity here and it's a tough opportunity to pass up."

Tavares has thrived in his first season in Toronto. He extended his point streak to four games (three goals, two assists) in the win against the Oilers and is second on the Maple Leafs with 68 points (36 goals, 32 assists), behind Mitchell Marner (74).

Toronto (39-20-4) is one point behind the Boston Bruins for second place in the Atlantic Division.

"I think it is something he needs to put to bed and get on with it," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said of Tavares' return to New York. "The thing about fans is they pay their money and get to say whatever they want.

"He's a good man. He was good for their franchise. He's great for our franchise. He made a decision to come home. I don't know if anyone can fault you for that."

Tavares was quick to remind everyone how eager he was to help turn the Islanders around when they selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft. The work ethic was visible each day and his willingness and ability to put New York on his back became normalcy.

That won't matter to the majority of what will surely be a packed Coliseum. It's hardly something he's unaware of.

"I don't really try to worry about it," Tavares said. "Like I've said many times, since Day One when I was drafted there, I fully embraced being an Islander. I loved it and I gave everything I had.

"Whatever it is now, it's not up to me to convince anybody of that. I've got enough to worry about just trying to play my game and help the Maple Leafs. That's what I'm going to do.

"Obviously, it's hard to say what I'll feel. I'm sure it'll be an emotional evening. But at the same time, I want to try to focus on playing and just go out there and do what I have to do."

Islanders forward Matt Martin, who played with Tavares from 2010-16, told NHL.com the two spoke last June, when Tavares wrestled with his decision in free agency. Martin said it was by no means a slam dunk Tavares would sign with Toronto.

"I don't think he had any intentions on it going down, I guess, the way it did," said Martin, who was reacquired by New York from Toronto on July 3, 2018. "He deeply cared about this organization. He loved Long Island. He always speaks highly of this team and living here. It played out the way it played out, but this is what makes sports great. The fans take stuff like this personally, and they should. They watched him grow up, they watched all of us grow up, and they feel connected to you. When you leave, they get upset. That's just part of it.

"We care about Johnny as a friend and as a person, but we still want to beat them on Thursday and our crowd is going to be rambunctious for sure. I think it'll be one of the better environments that we've played in. That'll be our focus. I think our fans will have a little bit of another focus, but our focus will be just finding a way to win continue to stay where we are."

What can't be lost in all of this is how the Islanders have fared in their first season without Tavares. Following a change in infrastructure after New York failed to clinch a playoff berth for a second straight season, Lou Lamoriello was hired on May 22, 2018, to run the franchise. He fired Garth Snow as general manager and coach Doug Weight on June 5 and hired Barry Trotz, fresh off a Stanley Cup championship with the Washington Capitals, as Weight's replacement on June 21.

In Trotz's first season as coach, New York (36-19-7) has gone from allowing the most goals in the NHL (293) to the fewest (144) and enter Thursday tied with the Capitals for the first place in the Metropolitan Division.

"They deserve a ton of credit," Tavares said. "They're having a tremendous season. Obviously, to go from last in a lot of defensive categories to one in pretty much all of them is extremely impressive. They're obviously having a heck of a year and a really good hockey team. It should be a tough game tomorrow night and it's going to be a challenge for us."
