Atlanta United signed free agent and former Vancouver Whitecaps defender Brek Shea to a one-year deal on Sunday.

Shea, a nine-year MLS veteran, appeared in 28 matches for the Whitecaps in 2018, including 13 starts for the Whitecaps. He has made 197 regular-season and eight post-season appearances.

"We're pleased to add a player of Brek's calibre and versatility to the club," Atlanta United vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a release. "He has significant experience, playing numerous years in MLS, overseas and for the U.S. men's national team, and will be a great addition to our locker room."

Shea, 28, has played multiple positions in midfield and defence. The left-footed player was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas.
