{allcanada} Oilers place goaltender Al Montoya on waivers

Mikko Koskinen appears to have won the Edmonton Oilers backup gig.

The Oilers placed goaltender Al Montoya on waivers Friday, for the purpose of assigning him to AHL Bakersfield.

Montoya was Koskinen's main competition for the No. 2 job behind Cam Talbot in Edmonton's crease, and there was at least some question as to who would prevail after Koskinen's lacklustre numbers early in the pre-season.

The 6-foot-4 Finn had a .800 save percentage through his first two games, but stopped 25 shots in a 3-2 win on Thursday.

He came over to Edmonton on a one-year, $2.5-million contract after a standout season in the KHL, posting a .937 save percentage and 1.57 goals-against average in 29 games with SKA Saint Petersburg.

The 30-year-old played four games with the New York Islanders in 2010-11.

Edmonton will begin regular-season play in Gothenburg against the New Jersey Devils.
