Connor McDavid has a new skill: being fashionable.
The Edmonton Oilers captain was featured by GQ's Tunnel Style, which was released Monday, and he shared that his fashion sense has grown since entering the NHL in 2015.
McDavid is the third athlete featured this fall in GQ's series. He opened up about his hair length and the evolution of his new-found style.
"When I got to the NHL, guys would make fun of me that I had the worst style in the League," McDavid told the magazine. "I showed up for my first road trip, and all the guys have these Gucci bags and Louis Vuitton bags … and I showed up with my [junior] team bag.
"Next thing you know, they're chirping my hair ... I think it's a little bit better now, but I still have some work to do."
McDavid said he supports players who can pull off extravagant style and cited P.K. Subban and Henrik Lundqvist as two of the NHL's best.
Subban and Lundqvist each regularly appear in the Fashionable 50 judged by Sports Illustrated.
McDavid may marvel at Subban's fashion, but he isn't trying to mimic it.
"You'll never see me with P.K.'s style," he said.
Few would say McDavid's style is better than his on-ice game. Fortunately, he doesn't hear about his lack of fashion sense from other NHL players.
"I don't get chirped about it very much anymore," McDavid said. "I think I have it under control now."
