Max Domi's time as a Montreal Canadien started off on the wrong foot Wednesday, and now he'll pay the price.
The 23-year-old winger has been suspended for the remainder of Montreal's pre-season games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for a sucker punch on Florida defenceman Aaron Ekblad Wednesday.
The two became engaged in a puck battle in the corner, but as Domi seemed to try and escalate the encounter, Ekblad had no interest. While the Panther turned to look at the referee, Domi dropped his glove and punched Ekblad in the face.
Domi received a match penalty and was ejected from the game in the third period.
Ekblad, who has a history of concussions, left the game to go through the concussion protocol, but was later cleared.
The suspension means Domi will miss five pre-season games.
Florida won the game 5-2.
