+1 !

I appreciate Steven Sullivan's and ceplaster's posts.  There's no arguing over taste, and many of us like and appreciate surround sound in many different forms.  Obviously there are good mixes and poor mixes, better and worse decodes, stellar upmixes and awful upmixes.  I like some better than others, and maybe I'm even "biased" for or against certain formats more than others.  But I admire--and am grateful for--what Oxford Dickie has done over the years AND what EoH has done over the years.  When you put so much love and effort and integrity and expertise into what you do, I suppose it's only natural to take umbrage when someone raises questions or casts aspersions.  And of course the internet is not a place where people are always scrupulously careful with their tone.  But I didn't read EoH's replies to manxminx as overly "defensive"; I take him at his word when he says that he benefits from feedback and critique, and I think his responses were attempts to explain his intentions and his process.  For my part, I really enjoy learning more about the principles and the technical aspects of upmixing in all its forms, just as I immensely enjoy the technical discussions that OD has lately begun posting to his Dreaming Spires blog.  Thanks to both of you for sharing your knowledge and your labors with the world.

I think the main difference between a discrete quad/surround mix and a 5.1 upmix is that the upmixing tends to play around with phase a good deal and ends up with occasionally unnatural sounds/placement as a result.    With a good decode or a discrete mix, the phase artifacts from the encoding are largely absent.  No big deal, it's all in the ear of the beholder.  It's all music and everyone has their own tastes.

Hmm, what surround mixes (other than classical ones where the surrounds are used for ambiance) *don't* sound 'un-natural'?
At actual performances does the direct sound for an instrument or voice *naturally* come from behind the listener, as it often does on typical surround mixes?  No, it doesn't.
(This is not to disparage typical surround mixes....we all love them here. We also love pan-potted recordings, multitracked and overdubbed, none of which is 'natural' either )

Biased? I have listened to upmixes in the past and find the un-natural and tiring to listen to, so i don't bother with them (bar one). That is not being biased, it's my personal choice.

The one artificially created surround that i do enjoy listening to is my Ambisonic Super-Stereo version of Chicago IV. Those that have heard it have made very favorable comments about it. And oddly, it doesn't sound fake.

Picking on Nimbus's choice of how they have chosen to record old 78rpm records isn't really a very interesting subject to discuss. They have been very open on the hows and why they have done it that particular way, which makes some sense. It's certainly better than a bone dry copy of the disc.

Would have been nice if you also gave comment on my replies to your first post....... especially about that natural way of mixing surround. Some explanation would be nice and even some pointing on where I don't use a natural way !
Saying : I don't listen to them and I don't buy them, should be a reason for me to say that you then also cannot judge them !!!!!!!!! And then your statements are just biased !
Now let's start a discussion of some very very bad UHJ encoded discs ;-) Like those from the 20's which were originally on 78 RPM and are full of cracks, distortion etc........LOL !!

Which is why i don't buy them, same goes for the upmix release of one of Steve Hackett's albums.

You do realize that even on some retail albums upmixing is used ? For instance : Gente Giant-Octopus ? 3 tracks there are upmixes !
