Max McCormick respects seniority, so the Ottawa Senators forward has no problems giving his No. 89 to new teammate Mikkel Boedker.
McCormick is a 26-year-old with far more experience in the AHL than NHL, while Boedker is a 618-game NHL vet who has worn No. 89 throughout his entire pro career.
"I got a call from our head equipment guy Johnny," McCormick told Sens writer Craig Medaglia. "He mentioned that Boedker also wears No. 89 and asked if I would be OK with switching numbers. I was totally cool with it."
McCormick, a 2011 sixth-round pick of the Sens, will switch to No. 17, a number he has worn in the AHL and back when he played at Ohio State.
"I was excited to get that number back again," he said. "I've worn it for as long as I can remember and pretty much every team that I've played for except Ottawa so this works out perfect for everybody. Mikkel is a 10-year NHL veteran and I definitely respect what he's been able to do in this league so he really didn't even need to ask. I'm happy to oblige."
Boedker was acquired by the Senators from the San Jose Sharks when Ottawa traded Mike Hoffman in June.
Mike Comrie and Cory Conacher are the only other players in Senators history to have worn No. 89. In fact, only 14 players have ever worn No. 89 in the NHL so both McCormick and Boedker are in rare company.
