Devante Smith-Pelly did not receive a qualifying offer from the Washington Capitals before the 5 p.m. ET deadline Monday, leaving him eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
The 26-year-old forward would have been a restricted free agent with the right to file for salary arbitration had the Capitals extended a qualifying offer to him.
The Capitals said they will continue to negotiate a contract with Smith-Pelly, but he is free to talk to other teams during the free agent interview period leading up to the opening of the free agent market at 12 p.m. ET on July 1.
Other notable NHL players who did not receive a qualifying offer were: goalies Robin Lehner (Buffalo Sabres) and Petr Mrazek (Philadelphia Flyers), defensemen Dylan DeMelo (San Jose Sharks) and Derrick Pouliot (Vancouver Canucks), and forwards Tobias Rieder (Los Angeles Kings) and Nick Shore (Calgary Flames).
The Pittsburgh Penguins did not announce the pending RFAs they extended qualifying offers, but forwards Tom Kuhnhackl and Riley Sheahan were not among them, the Post-Gazette reported. The Chicago Blackhawks also did not release a list of players they gave offers, but forward Anthony Duclair reportedly did not receive one.
Smith-Pelly was one of Washington's Stanley Cup Playoff heroes, scoring seven goals in 24 games to help it win the Cup for the first time in its 43-season history. That equaled his goal production in 75 games during the regular season.
Smith-Pelly's three goals in the Stanley Cup Final tied teammate Alex Ovechkin and Vegas Golden Knights forwards Tomas Nosek and Reilly Smith for most in the series, which the Capitals won in five games.
The Capitals signed Smith-Pelly to a one-year, two-way contract ($650,000 NHL salary/$300,000 American Hockey League salary) on July 3, 2017, after the New Jersey Devils bought out the final year on his previous contract, making him a UFA.
A second-round pick (No. 42) of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2010 NHL Draft, Smith-Pelly has 93 points (40 goals, 53 assists) in 341 games with the Capitals, Devils, Ducks and Montreal Canadiens.
