{allcanada} Hamilton, Ferland traded to Hurricanes by Flames for Hanifin, Lindholm

Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox were traded to the Carolina Hurricanes by the Calgary Flames for Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm on Saturday.

Hamilton, a 25-year-old defenseman, had 44 points (17 goals, 27 assists) in 82 games for the Flames this season. He has 220 points (64 goals, 156 assists) in 423 NHL games with the Flames and Boston Bruins. He was the No. 9 pick by the Bruins in the 2011 NHL Draft.

"We've gone nine years missing the playoffs," Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell told NHL Network. "[We] said in the offseason, we have new ownership [with] Tom Dundon; we needed to change up the culture a little bit.

"We have some pretty good assets, we need to turn those into other assets. Dougie Hamilton led the League in scoring for defenseman with 17 goals (tied with Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyers and Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning), Ferland had a great year, had 21 goals, and then [a] very good prospect in Adam Fox. We felt that all three pieces are going to make our hockey club better not just today, but going into the future.

"I think Brad [Flames GM Treliving] and I started talking about this three, four weeks ago. We had a million deals going on, but it really came to a head today where we said. 'Let's focus on making the deal or turn the page.' We spent a good hour; their table was right behind mine so it was easy to stay on top of them and get a deal done."

Hanifin, a 21-year-old defenseman, had NHL career highs in goals (10) and points (32) in 79 games with the Hurricanes this season, his third in the League. He also played in his first NHL All-Star Game.

Carolina selected Hanifin, who becomes a restricted free agent July 1, with the No. 5 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He has 83 points (18 goals, 65 assists) in 239 NHL games.

Lindholm, a 23-year-old center who becomes a restricted free agent July 1, had 44 points (16 goals, 28 assists) in 81 games for the Carolina this season. He was the No. 5 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and has 188 points (64 goals, 124 assists) in 374 games with the Hurricanes.

Hanifin and Lindholm played for Bill Peters in Carolina. Peters was named Flames coach on April 23.

Ferland, a 26-year-old forward, had 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists) in 77 games for the Flames this season. A fifth-round pick by Calgary (No. 133) in the 2010 NHL Draft, he has 89 points (42 goals, 47 assists) in 250 NHL games.

Fox, a 20-year-old defenseman, had 28 points (six goals, 22 assists) in 29 games in his second season with Harvard University. He was Calgary's third-round pick (No. 66) in the 2016 NHL Draft.

This is the second straight year the Flames have made a major trade on the second day of the draft; they sent their first-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft to the New York Islanders for defenseman Travis Hamonic on June 24, 2017. The Islanders used that pick (No. 12) to select defenseman Noah Dobson on Friday.
