In 26 games so far this season, Pearce is hitting .291 with four home runs and 16 RBI. The 35-year-old product of Lakeland, Fla., is in the final year of a two-year, $12.5 million deal he signed prior to last season.
The move now means that Pearce has played for every team in the American League East.
The 23-year-old Espinal is hitting .313 this year in 65 games with the Salem Red Sox.
Pearce, a veteran of 12 MLB seasons, has a career average of .255 and an OPS of .775.
The Jays will be back in action Friday when they host the Detroit Tigers, who are in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. Former Blue Jay Francisco Liriano is expected to get the ball against right-hander Marcus Stroman.
