OESTERSUND, Sweden — Canada won gold in the men's and women's competitions Saturday at the world senior curling championships at the Ostersund Arena.

Sherry Anderson's Saskatoon team of third Patty Hersikorn, second Brenda Goertzen and lead Anita Silvernagle beat the United States 5-4 in the final.

"World champion sounds marvellous, it really does," Anderson said. "I've been playing this sport a long time trying to get this title, so it's really sweet."

Switzerland topped Sweden 5-3 to win bronze.

Wade White's Edmonton rink of third Barry Chwedoruk, second Daniel Holowaychuk and lead George White won the men's title with an 8-2 rout of Sweden's Mats Wranaa.

"World champion? It's taken forty years of curling, it feels good," White said. "It's been a battle all my life just to get out of Alberta. I'm going to savour it now."

The United States beat Scotland 7-2 for the bronze.

Also Saturday, Laura Crocker of Edmonton and Kirk Muyres of Saskatoon won world mixed doubles bronze with an 8-3 victory over South Korea's Hyeji Jang and Kijeong Lee.

Switzerland's Michele Jaeggi and Sven Michel won gold with a 9-6 win over Russia's Maria Komarova and Daniil Goriachev.
