Toronto Blue Jays third basemen Josh Donaldson will play the role of designated hitter over the next few games as he deals with problems with his throwing shoulder, manager John Gibbons announced on MLB Network Radio Friday.
Donaldson was in the Opening Day lineup on Thursday against the New York Yankees but had trouble throwing to first base throughout the game. Gibbons says everything is "structurally" fine with the shoulder, but will serve as DH in order to get it back to where it needs to be.
"Last couple weeks of spring training he started to experience that and he never really had to cut the ball loose," explained Gibbons. "He didn't have to, but last night it showed up pretty good. Everybody could see that. What we're probably going to do we'll have to DH him until he's ready to go. But structurally everything is fine."
The three-time All-Star and 2015 MVP will bat second against the Yankees on Friday in game two of their four-game set.
Yangervis Solarte will replace Donaldson at the hot corner while regular DH Kendrys Morales will see more time on the bench.
The 32-year-old dealt with calf injuries to start the 2017 season but still finished with a .270 average with 33 home runs and 78 RBIs over 113 games.
Donaldson will be a free-agent at season's end.
