BUFFALO -- Drake Batherson scored two goals and Brett Howden had a goal and three assists to give Canada a 8-2 win against Switzerland in the quarterfinal of the 2018 World Junior Championship at KeyBank Center.
After Canada got goals from Howden (Tampa Bay Lightning) at 0:48 and Cale Makar (Colorado Avalanche) at 8:29, Batherson, a fourth-round pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2017 NHL Draft, scored a power play goal at 12:06 of the first period and later made it 4-0 at 6:12 of the second period.
Jordan Kyrou (St. Louis Blues) made it 5-0 1:12 later. Switzerland starting goalie Philip Wuthrich was replaced by Matteo Ritz following Kyrou's goal. Wuthrich made 21 saves; Ritz made 31.
Canada will face the Czech Republic in one of the semifinal games Thursday. The Czech Republic advanced with a 4-3 shootout win against Finland.
Switzerland made it 5-1 on a deflected goal by Dario Rohrbach at 8:46 of the second period, but Canada defenseman Conor Timmins (Avalanche) made it 6-1 at 12:19 of the second. Timmins is the 14th different player from Canada to score a goal in the tournament.
Switzerland forward Axel Simic scored a shorthanded goal at 10:26 of the third period that made it 6-2 with a wrist shot against Carter Hart (Philadelphia Flyers), and Canada captain Dillon Dube made it 7-2 46 seconds later.
Max Comtois (Anaheim Ducks) made it 8-2 at 19:09.
Hart made 13 saves.
