The Montreal Alouettes have hired former NFL and NCAA coach Mike Sherman as the team's new head coach.
Sherman, 63, is best known for coaching the Green Bay Packers from 2000-2005. Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed announced the hire on Wednesday.
"We went through a thorough selection process, but from the beginning, we knew that Mike was the man for the job. We liked his vision of the team and his expectations," Reed said. "He has experience as a head coach at the professional level and he will know how to motivate his players and push them to perform to their full potential."
He finished with a 57-39 record in his six years in Green Bay, leading the team to three division titles, four playoff appearances, and two NFC Divisional Round games. He was fired after the team posted a 4-12 record in 2005, the worst record of Brett Favre's career.
Sherman's last coaching gig in the NFL was as the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins from 2012-2013. He also had NFL coaching stints with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks.
TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor noted earlier Wednesday he'd heard for years that the Alouettes owners wanted to find "the next Marc Trestman" and Sherman's NFL experience would seem to fit that bill.
"My goal is to bring passion and accountability that our fans will see when the team plays this season. We need to give Montrealers a competitive team that strives to be at a championship level in everything we do as a team and as an organization. I am looking forward to talking to the players and hear their thoughts about this upcoming season," Sherman said in a team release. "I have heard some great things about the Canadian Football League and I know that the fans in Montreal are passionate and we will give them a competitive team on the field. We know what's ahead and we're all looking forward to training camp next May."
Sherman also worked in the NCAA, most notably as head coach of Texas A&M from 2008-2011. He finished 25-25, leading the team to three bowl appearances.
Sherman's most recent coaching gig was at Nauset Regional High School in Massachusetts, resigning in May after two seasons and a 4-18 record.
The Alouettes fired Jacques Chapdelaine in September, Reed took over as interim head coach as the team lost their final seven games to close the season. The Alouettes finished the year 3-15, missing the playoffs for the third straight season.
