MONTREAL – Felix Rosenqvist won pole position for the Hydro-Quebec Montreal ePrix electric car race, while Lucas Di Grassi came fifth but remained in position to clinch the Formula E championship.
Rosenqvist, driving for Mahindra, posted the top lap on the 2.75-kilometre street circuit of one minute 22.344 seconds, edging Sam Bird of Virgin Racing's 1:22.559. The Swede picked up three points for winning the pole, leaving him one point behind Bird for third place in drivers standings.
Di Grassi got his Abt Audi into the showdown between the top five at the end of qualifying, but an early mishap left him last.
However, the Brazilian maintained his 18-point lead over Sebastien Buemi going into the final race of the season later Sunday.
Buemi's chances for a second straight Formula E championship were set back when he made what appeared to be a braking error in qualifying. He will start 13th on the grid. His teammate Nico Prost was ordered to start at the back after his car caught fire and needed parts replaced on Saturday.
Buemi had already taken a major hit when he was disqualified for using an underweight car during the first race of the weekend "double-header" on Saturday. Buemi's Renault, which needed major work after a crash during pre-race practice, was found to be four kilograms under the 880-kg minimum weight.
