If you're a Montreal Canadiens season-ticket holder and you want your ducats printed, it's going to cost you.
According to the Montreal Gazette, the Canadiens have informed fans via email they're charging an additional $150 per seat, plus taxes, for the printing of the traditional-looking ticket for the 2017-18 season. This new fee is coupled with an administration fee of $100, plus taxes, bringing additional costs on two season tickets to $477.14.
The reason for the change: the Canadiens are moving to a mobile-only format for fans to enter the Bell Centre. They say the decision was made for reasons of security, ease of use and environmental sustainability.
However, some fans — naturally — are outraged, calling the new policy a cash grab.
One older season-ticket holder doesn't own a smartphone and has no choice but to pay for the printed tickets.
"They don't think about this stuff," the man told the newspaper. "And if you read the letter, you'll see that they just jammed it at the bottom of the letter with this nice little surprise.
"Soon they'll be charging to use the urinal and escalator, or breathe the air from your seats."
Those who have corporate season tickets will likely also have to spring for the hard copies and fork over the added costs.
"It's super-duper important as a business because we give customers tickets for Christmas parties, for birthdays, retirements, things like that," said a businessperson to the paper. "Most of the companies we give tickets to, we include a pair or two in an envelope and they use it for a draw at Christmas time."
According to the Gazette, the Canadiens have sold out every game at the Bell Centre since Jan. 8, 2004. Including the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the sellout streak has reached 541 games.
