{allcanada} Oilers to host celebration of life in memory of Dave Semenko

The Edmonton Oilers will host a celebration of life in memory of Dave Semenko on Thursday.

Semenko died on June 29 at age 59 following a brief battle with cancer.

Family members, close friends and several former teammates including Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey and Mark Messier, will be in attendance to share stories and honour their beloved friend and teammate who was known for his toughness on the ice and his kind heart off it.

"One of the first Oilers I met in 1978, I didn't know at the time the impact he would have in my life and my career," Gretzky said via a team statement last week. "He was the toughest player I knew and yet the biggest Teddy Bear you would ever know. A beloved Oiler that will be missed dearly because of his kind heart and funny sense of humour. He made us all better people. RIP No. 27, thanks for your friendship."

The memorial, which is being held in partnership with Semenko's family and close friends, will take place at Rogers Place at 2 p.m. local time on Thursday and is open to the public. Fans who wish to pay their respects at the rink can do so by a reserving a free general admission ticket online here.
