{allcanada} Report: Leafs offered JVR for Hamonic, Duchene’s agent upset

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a concerted effort to land defenceman Travis Hamonic at last week's NHL Draft, offering a 2018 first-round pick and winger James van Riemsdyk to the New York Islanders, according to a report from Arthur Staple of Newsday.

Hamonic would eventually be dealt to Calgary for a first- and two second-round picks on Saturday, as Islanders general manager Garth Snow opted for futures instead of the immediate scoring punch a player like van Riemsdyk would add to his lineup.

The 28-year-old has one year left on his contract, which carries a $4.25-million cap hit.

He had 29 goals and 62 points in 82 games this past season, and has hit the 30-goal mark once, in 2013-14.

Staple also mentioned that Snow was considering packaging Hamonic with a first-round pick of his own in an attempt to acquire Matt Duchene from the Colorado Avalanche.

Colorado has been shopping Duchene for quite some time now, and GM Joe Sakic's inability to get a deal done for the star forward has left Duchene's agent Pat Brisson "seriously unhappy," according two Staple.
