Florida Panthers veteran Shawn Thornton says Alexei Emelin is "what's wrong" with the NHL these days, calling the Montreal Canadiens defenceman a head hunter.
Emelin delivered a questionable hit on Derek MacKenzie of the Florida Panthers on Thursday night and Thornton wasted no time going after him on the ice.
Following the game, a 6-2 Montreal win, Thornton was still upset, sounding off to La Press writer Marc Antoine Godin.
"I think he's what's wrong with the league these days," Thornton said. "I think there's no accountability anymore. You can run around and take headshots at our captain and just turtle and the refs save your life."
"That's my honest opinion of that guy," he added. "I don't have any respect for him. I think he's a pretty good defenseman, but I don't like the way he plays. I don't mind people playing hard but I've seen him with a lot of cheap s— in the last 10 years. I don't mind battling but I've seen him head hunt a lot of guys and never ever answer for it."
