1977: Ian Turnbull of the Toronto Maple Leafs sets an NHL record for defensemen by scoring five goals in a 9-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Maple Leaf Gardens.
Turnbull scores two goals against Ed Giacomin and three against Jim Rutherford, becoming the first player in NHL history to score five goals in five shots.
"It was one of those nights where things happened to click," Turnbull says after scoring two goals in the second period and three in the third.
Four decades later, he is still the only defenseman in NHL history to score five goals in a game.

1918: Joe Malone scores five goals in the Montreal Canadiens' 11-2 win against Toronto. Malone extends his goal-scoring streak to 13 games, beginning with NHL's opening night on Dec. 19, 1917, scoring 34 goals in that stretch.
1974: Bobby Clarke has six points, including his second NHL hat trick, Ross Lonsberry scores three goals and Simon Nolet scores a goal and has four assists in the Philadelphia Flyers' 12-2 win against Detroit at the Spectrum. It's the first double hat trick in Flyers' history.
1980: Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers becomes the second player in NHL history to score 700 goals when he gets Nos. 699 and 700 in the Rangers' 6-3 victory against the Washington Capitals in Landover, Maryland. He scores No. 699 with a second-period goal past Wayne Stephenson, then joins Gordie Howe in the NHL's 700-goal club early in the third period by taking a pass from Don Maloney and beating Stephenson with a wrist shot.
1989: The Pittsburgh Penguins end a 42-game winless streak at the Spectrum by defeating the Flyers 5-3. It's Pittsburgh's first win in Philadelphia since Jan. 20, 1974; the Penguins lose 39 games and tie three between wins at the Spectrum.
1991: Rookie Jaromir Jagr scores three goals for his first NHL hat trick, helping the Penguins defeat the Boston Bruins 6-2 at the Civic Arena. Jagr, 19, becomes the youngest player in Penguins history to score three goals in a game.
1994: Scotty Bowman earns his 1,000th coaching victory (regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs) when the visiting Red Wings defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1. Bowman became the first coach in NHL history to reach 1,000 total wins. His record improves to 1,000-578-231. Bowman finishes his career with 1,244 regular-season wins, 2,141 regular-season games coached, 223 playoff wins, 353 playoff games coached and nine Stanley Cup championships - all NHL records for coaches.
2011: Forward Johan Franzen scores five goals in Detroit's 7-5 victory against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place. Franzen becomes the first Detroit player to score five goals in a game since Sergei Fedorov on Dec. 26, 1996. No NHL player has scored five goals in a game since Franzen.
