Flames team scope

Calgary Flames forward Troy Brouwer won't play Tuesday after sustaining a hand injury Friday in a 4-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks. Micheal Ferland will take Brouwer's place at right wing on a line with left wing Kris Versteeg and center Sean Monahan. Brouwer has 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 36 games. "We're going to give an update on his status [Wednesday]," coach Glen Gulutzan said. Goaltender Brian Elliott is expected to start for Flames, who traveled Tuesday and went directly from the Denver airport to Pepsi Center for the morning skate. It's a one-game trip for Calgary, which will fly home Tuesday night. "We were joking about it, saying this is the way it should be, right out the wrapper," Gulutzan said. "Onto the plane and onto the ice, guys holding their bags. It was back to old school, like peewee. We're just going to get ready to play tonight. We talked about it before when we went through the schedule, that this one is a game where we're going to grind it out. We're going to come in here and get it done."

Avalanche team scope

Goaltender Calvin Pickard will start his second consecutive game for the Colorado Avalanche with Semyon Varlamov recovering from a groin injury. Jeremy Smith will dress as the backup after being recalled from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. Pickard had 38 saves Friday, when the Avalanche defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime to end a five-game losing streak. The Avalanche have lost eight straight home games (0-7-1) since a 4-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 15. "I'm hoping that our guys are going to come refreshed out of the break," coach Jared Bednar said. "Maybe that little bit of a mental break will do them some good. We're coming off a big win in Chicago where the guys played real well. We have the ability to play well if guys are focused and playing hard." Forward Joe Colborne signed with the Avalanche as a free agent on July 1 after three seasons with the Flames. "It's going to be fun to go out there and hopefully get a win and get two big points for us." Colborne said. "We're coming back fresh and looking to put the start of the season behind us." Center Matt Duchene's next point will be the 400th of his NHL career.
