Blue Bombers head Mike O'Shea stopped shy saying he wants to return to the Winnipeg next year during his season-ending news conference on Wednesday.

"I like what we've started," O'Shea said, "but I'm not prepared to discuss my contract or future with anybody but (general manager) Kyle (Walters)."

O'Shea, who coached this season with an expiring contract, said there is no timeline for when negotiations will take place with Walters.

The Blue Bombers turbulent season came to an end on Sunday when kicker Justin Medlock's 61-yard field goal came up well short of the uprights in the final minute of the Western Semi-Final. O'Shea stood by his decision to try the field goal rather than try to convert a third and four on the Lions' 53-yard line. He reiterated several times that Medlock is the best kicker in CFL history and that he did not regret his decision.

The Blue Bombers opened the 2016 season 1-4, but were then led on a seven-game win streak by quarterback Matt Nichols, who was started in favour of Drew Willy. The Bombers finished the regular season 11-7, third in West Division.

O'Shea added a vote of confidence during his news conference to free-agent to-be Nichols, saying he had "no doubt" Nichols is the quarterback is he could win a Grey Cup with.
