Goaltender Craig Anderson took an indefinite leave of absence from the Ottawa Senators to be with his wife, who began cancer treatment Wednesday.
Nicholle Anderson was diagnosed with throat cancer and started chemotherapy and radiation treatment in New York.
Anderson won't be available when the Senators host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; RDS, TSN5, CSN-PH, NHL.TV). Mike Condon will start and Andrew Hammond, who was recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League earlier this week, will be the backup, coach Guy Boucher said on Wednesday.
Anderson took a personal leave for six days during training camp. On Oct. 27, he took another personal leave to be with Nicholle; he returned and made 37 saves in a 2-0 shutout against the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 30.
"We know he is going to miss some games very soon, so he basically wants to play all the games that he can until he misses some," Boucher said Sunday, following Anderson's 33-save shutout in a 2-0 win against the New York Rangers.
Anderson was the NHLs First Star for the week ending Nov. 27 after going 4-0-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average, a .960 save percentage and one shutout.
