Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, and Toronto Maple Leafs rookie center Auston Matthews, the first pick of the 2016 draft, will go head-to-head for the first time in the NHL at Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TSN4, SNOL, NHL.TV).
McDavid, 19, and Matthews, 19, were teammates for Team North America at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 in September. Matthews had two goals and three points in three games. McDavid, who was captain, had three assists in three games.
Matthews said playing alongside McDavid was a big boost prior to the start of his rookie season.
"It helped my confidence for sure," Matthews said. "He was so easy to play with because he just does everything so well at such a high speed. Playing with him was a blast."
Matthews is tied for the NHL lead with six goals. McDavid is tied for the League lead with 12 points.
"It's going to be cool going up against him," Matthews said. "Edmonton has gotten off to a pretty hot start (7-2-0) so once again it'll be a tough challenge for us. I know all of us [in Toronto] will be pretty hungry to get back in the win column."
Matthews was asked if he and McDavid have kept in touch since the World Cup.
"Not really," he said. "We're on our respective teams now so we're pretty focused on that. When the season is over maybe we'll get together again or end up seeing each other somewhere."
The Oilers and Maple Leafs play again at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Nov. 29.
