Calgary Flames center Sean Monahan was on the ice with some of his teammates for an informal skate Monday, less than two weeks after withdrawing from the World Cup of Hockey 2016 because of a back strain.
Monahan, who turns 22 on Oct. 12, told Sportsnet that he would be ready for the start of Flames training camp next week.
Monahan was selected on March 2 to play for Team North America, comprised of players 23 and younger from Canada and the United States, but was replaced on the roster by Florida Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck on Sept. 2 after straining his back while training.
The Flames signed Monahan, who was a restricted free agent, to a seven-year contract reportedly worth $44.625 million on Aug. 19. Monahan said he regrets missing the World Cup but added, "The Flames made a big commitment to me. I needed to be ready for the season."
Monahan, who was selected by Calgary with the No. 6 pick at the 2013 NHL Draft, had 27 goals and 36 assists in 81 games last season.
