TORONTO — Brad Marchand scored shorthanded with 43 second left in regulation, and Canada defeated a tough Team Europe side 2-1 to claim the 2016 World Cup of Hockey title.
Europe masterfully controlled the game for two and a half periods, stifling the Canadian attack and silencing the Air Canada Centre crowd.
Trailing 1-0 for much of the game, the Canadians came alive late, and Patrice Bergeron tied the game on a power play with just under three minutes to go.
Zdeno Chara scored for Europe in the first period.
