MONTREAL — Mikhail Sergachev has signed his first professional contract.
The 18-year-old defenceman and ninth-overall pick at last week's NHL draft signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.
Sergachev led all Ontario Hockey League defenders with 17 goals in his rookie season for the Windsor Spitfires in 2015-16.
He also had 40 assists and 57 points, good for third at his position.
Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said at the draft that he sees Sergachev eventually replacing current Montreal defenceman Andrei Markov.
Sergachev will be one of 45 players taking part in the Canadiens' development camp beginning on Sunday.
