CALGARY — Canadian downhill skier Larisa Yurkiw has announced her retirement after the best season of her career.
The 28-year-old from Owen Sound, Ont., won two silver and a bronze in World Cup downhills this past season.
Yurkiw finished the winter ranked third overall in women's World Cup downhill behind Lindsey Vonn of the U.S. and Fabienne Suter of Switzerland.
But Yurkiw told The Canadian Press that injuries and surgeries on both knees have taken their toll.
Dropped from Canada's alpine ski team prior to the 2014 Winter Games, Yurkiw funded herself and qualified on her own to compete at the Olympics.
