ROME — Milos Raonic overcame two breaks of his serve to get past Italian wild card Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 Monday at the Italian Open.
The 10th-seeded Raonic overcame a rough game that saw him double-fault four times. He had five aces and managed to convert three of nine break point opportunities.
Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., will next face Nick Kyrgios, who eliminated Salvatore Caruso, another Italian wild card, 6-1, 6-2.
Kyrgios and Raonic have split four head-to-head meetings, with the Australian winning the last two. The 20th-ranked Kyrgios beat Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the quarter-final of the Miami Masters in their only meeting this year.
Also on Monday, Italian Andreas Seppi needed two tiebreakers to beat Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (5), 7-5 (2).
