TORONTO - Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Mitch Marner is the Ontario Hockey League's most outstanding player this season.
The London Knights forward captured the Red Tilson Trophy after finishing third in league scoring with 39 goals and 77 assists in 57 games.
"It's a big award and an honour, but it wouldn't have happened without my teammates," Marner said. "Building upon the three years with the whole coaching staff and without the guys on the team this wouldn't have happened. It's a great award, but we still have a way to go."
Marner, who turns 19 later this week, was selected fourth overall by Toronto at last year's NHL draft.
In 184 career games with the Knights, he has collected 96 goals and 205 assists.
The Tilson Trophy is named in honour of Albert (Red) Tilson, a former scoring champion who was killed in action during the Second World War.
"Mitch has shown his great passion, determination and skill throughout this entire Ontario Hockey League season and is very deserving of this distinction," Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "The Maple Leafs organization is very proud of Mitch being named OHL Player of the Year and wish him, and the Knights, continued success in the playoffs."
