Vincent Lecavalier told reporters Sunday that he plans to retire this off-season.
The 36-year-old said he has yet to file the paperwork as he's still "decompressing" recent events that saw his Los Angeles Kings eliminated from the post-season at the hands of the San Jose Sharks.
Lecavalier informed Kings GM Dean Lombardi that he planned to retire at season's end when he was traded from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in January.
"The player [Lecavalier] made it clear to us that was his intention. Going forward, given the players we have to sign, it was imperative. We could give him what he wanted, which was a serious shot at going out as a winner, but we could not make that commitment going forward," Lombardi said in January.
Lecavalier played in the NHL for 17 seasons, totalling 949 points (421 goals, 528 assists) in 1,212 games.
He was drafted first overall in the 1998 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he spent the first 14 seasons of his career, winning the Stanley Cup in 2004. He was also the MVP of Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004.
The 6-foot-4 centre won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in 2007 and was a four-time all-star.
His career stalled after signing a five-year, $22.5-million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, but a mid-season trade this year to the Kings seemed to have rejuvenated the native of Ile-Bizard, Que.
Lecavalier scored 10 goals and added seven assists in 42 games with the Kings, and managed a goal and an assist in five playoff games this season.
