In its second episode back, titled "Transgressive Border Crossing," "Orphan Black" dove right back into the story Season 3 left audiences hanging on. With more understanding of Beth's (Tatiana Maslany) past, it looks like M.K. is going to be the connective tissue linking the events of Season 1 with the unraveling mystery moving forward in Season 4.
With Neolution hot on Sarah Manning's tail, the family's peaceful respite in Iceland is cut short and Kendall (Allison Steadman), Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy), Sarah and Kira (Skylar Wexler) find themselves running back to the belly of the beast – London.
A comic book shop isn't necessarily the first place one would think of when picturing a safe haven for The Clone Club, but then again, there's something rather perfect about a secret lair existing just beneath. Reuniting with Cosima and Scott (Josh Vokey), with DYAD no longer the immediate threat, the group once again pursues the answers needed to both heal Cosima's health issues and find the real root of Neolution's cause.
With Felix (Jordan Gavaris) back in the picture – it's fairly obvious the new familial bond between Kendall, S, Sarah and Kira has left him feeling like an outsider and while he finally comes clean about his mission to find his own birth parents, Sarah succeeds at enlisting his help one more time and the two dive into the belly of the Neo beast — or, a goth cyberpunk dance club.
On the hunt
for the pregnant Neo girl seen on the surveillance tapes at Beth's apartment, Sarah ends up having a run-in with a friend of M.K.'s. This new lead sends Manning head first into a frightening, and wormy, discovery.
Apparently, not only is this organic tech alive, there is a self destruct mechanism that violently kills its host if there is any attempt on surgical removal. With a quick slight of hand, Sarah uses this mysterious man's phone to track down M.K.
No matter how mild-mannered a Laundromat meet-up may sound, it didn't go according to plan as once again M.K. – real name Mika, as we soon learn – is one step ahead and communicates with Sarah through video camera surveillance. Not a lot is divulged here, but instead of pertinent details, we learn more about this NEO threat that drove Beth to jump in front of that train.
No sooner does M.K. drive off, that the two Neos from episode 1 – you know, the sexually active EMS agents who buried that cheek-less body in the woods? – corner Sarah. It's really Mika they're after and after a bit of prodding in Manning's mouth, the two confirm they have the wrong clone.
It's a WTF moment, for sure, and one that immediately elevates the stakes for Sarah. Not only is she on the hunt for Neolution answers, she now has the realization one of those wormy buggers is embedded in her own cheek.
What did DYAD do to her when she was captured in Season 3? Can she extract the tech and survive? And who is that mysterious dude from the night club? The further down the rabbit hole Sarah gets, the more dangerous and pressing the questions become.
"Orphan Black" airs Thursdays 10 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America.
