Bryan Murray stepped down as Ottawa Senators general manager Sunday and will remain with the organization in a senior adviser role.
Assistant Pierre Dorion was promoted to take over Murray's GM duties.
"It's time to step aside and have a different role with the organization," Murray said in comments tweeted by the Senators. "I'm proud to introduce Pierre Dorion as the next general manager of the Ottawa Senators."
Murray, 73, has been the GM since 2007, the year the Senators advanced to their only Stanley Cup Final, which they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. Murray is battling Stage 4 colon cancer and has been considering what his role with the Senators should be for more than a year.
Dorion, 43, has been with the Senators for nine years. An Ottawa native, he was the director of player personnel with Ottawa before being elevated to assistant general manager in 2014. He was an amateur scout for the Montreal Canadiens for 11 seasons and also worked for two years with the New York Rangers.
"I'm stepping into big shoes," Dorion said. "I'm so excited that Bryan Murray is staying on in an advisory role."
The Senators did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have missed the postseason in three of the past four seasons.
"We need to learn the lessons from this past season so that we never repeat them again in the future," Dorion said.
